Notre Dame president Father John  Jenkins has said that no words can express the horror and grief the campus is experiencing after the tragic death of 20-year old student Declan Sullivan.

“No words can convey the shock and grief we all are experiencing.  Declan was a well-liked, bright and enthusiastic film and marketing student and a valued member of the Notre Dame family. His death is a tremendous loss that will be felt very deeply and we share in your grief during this incredibly difficult time.”

Deeply shocked Notre Dame coaches and players canceled all pre-match activity after the tragic death of  Sulivan who was killed when a hydraulic lift collapsed while he was taping practice.

The State of Indiana has opened an investigation into how the horrific accident occurred after the 20-foot high tower was blown down by 50 mile an hour winds.

Sullivan was a marketing and film major who also wrote for the campus newspaper and helped out at team practices.

"This is a time of extraordinary sorrow and grief for university and for athletic and football program," said Jack Swarbrik the athletic director.

Swarbrick, was at  the practice field at the time, said  the gust that knocked over the lift  was  "an extraordinary burst of wind."

"Things started flying by me that had been stationary for all of practice - containers, towels, etc. I noticed the netting by the goal post start to bend dramatically and I heard a crash," he said.

...and Kelly admitted that he allowed the practice to go ahead in dangerous conditions, thus requiring the videographer to be there. Definite negligence here.
@Celtica43...That's incorrect. He wasn't doing "independent" filming or journalism. He was the team's videographer who films all of their practices.
I was considering going to Dublin for the Navy/Irish game. But this sickens me. Kelly and his superiors have to resign.
I doubt the football coach had anything to do w/this student's being there. More likely he decided to be there for the newspaper. He was legally an adult and could have decided it was not safe for himself. Highly unlikely anyone made him stay up there filming. But likely the lawyers are lining up! Mother of 4 now grown boys.
God bless the Sullivans in their time of grief. It's such a heartbreaking loss, especially since it could have been avoided. I know that Brian Kelly must be devastated as well. But coaches have been fired for much less...
The Notre Dame coach should be fired. They fire coaches for losing games. This young kid should not have been out in that weather filming a practice. Brian Kelly should step down.
The lawyers are lining up.
I just can't believe this kid was out filming practice in a hydrolic scissors lift. The winds were rediculous the past few days. He should have never been put in that situation. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends who are mourning his loss. God bless.
So sorry to hear about this happening to Declan Sullivan. He looks brilliantly happy in the photo. My condolences, also to his family.
My condolences to his family. May they find comfort at this time in our Lord Jesus Christ who gives us the hope of eternal life, David Hayes, Limerick city
Tragic,my heart goes out to the family.
