This is a great honor for a great civil rights advocate. And for those revisionists out there who are trying to polish old Dick Nixon's image, recall that "Tricky Dick" fired Father Hesburgh as Chairman of the US Commission On Civil Rights because he refused to sit idly by during Nixon's race-baiting "southern strategy".

IrelandNorth-Though every Irish-American by virtue of geneology is entitled to Irish citizenship.''
Youre wrong. The Irish nation consists of those born here, raised here or who have contributed, integrated and become part of irish society. An irish granny doesnt make you part of Ireland.

Hesburg? Not very Irish is it? Presumably his mother was Irish, like Martin Sheen-Estevez et al. Still, if he was a civil rights supporter, good. Though every Irish-American by virtue of geneology is entitled to Irish citizenship. The Irish nation is more that just the island of Ireland and territorial seas with its 5m. population. It's c. 60m people worldwide across the Atlantic Ocean in USA/Canada, Australia/New Zealand, or further afield across the Irish Sea like UK.

Lovely to see Fr. Hesburgh honoured this way. Sad to see the office of President no longer to the same standard. Is Notre Dame going to loose its "Catholic" status?
