What we need to consider, is many of the judges are probably practising Catholics, in Ireland anyway, and there must be a deep rooted mentality to 'strike' a priest or a religious would send you to hell.
I know of judges and magistrates who groan when they can't get out of bringing a court order or conviction against one appearing before them.

In NY news yesterday: Northwest Jesuits pay $166 million (more! They've already paid $55 million) to more than 500 American Indian and Alaskan victims to settle abuse cases, a Philadelphia judge schedules trials for five church defendants on conspiracy charges (abuse by more than 50 Philadelphia priests is documented), and the Philadelphia cases "force bishops to reassess rule changes" in their "Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People," which does not seem to be stemming the problem. It just grows worse in the US, and those in positions of authority do not seem at all able to cope with it. They are the ones most "in denial."

@Bernadett - there are still many catholics "in denial" about the crimes and actions of individual priests, and are still actively supporting them. Oliver O'Grady and Eugene Greene are but two who undoubtedly still receive stipends from the church or church members. Even retired Bishop of Ferns, Brendan Comiskey lives in a bungalow that was paid for out of diocesan funds. That is why I no longer contribute directly to church collections.

What's the problem? He's not special and should not be treated as such.

well you must remember in Ireland the church was running the country up until the s..t hit the fan regarding all thees priests, one only has to read the Murphy Report to see how the bishops could walk into police stations and do as they pleased. What I would love to know is where this man gets the money to carry on his crimes who pays his way, laptops dont come cheap surely the Dublin diocese would not be paying for his life stile, would they ????

I think it is a disgrace, just another example of evil masquerading as priests and do gooders. He should have been locked up for the rest of his life. Dont understand any justice system that allows the likes to be free and live among people to continue their evil ways. I am sure there are hundreds of victims for each one of these child molesters. We have to come up with an effective way to deal with them, I recommend castration.

And he is still free and at liberty to maim and damage more innocent lives. It would seem to me that the Church has totally abrogated its responsibilities in relation to this defrocked cleric. Not acceptable, not by a long shot!!
