A mother of one from Northern Ireland is among the missing and feared dead following last week’s earthquake in New Zealand.

Julie Wong, formally Johnston, from Lisburn, Co. Antrim, immigrated to New Zealand five years ago where she has been living with her husband and four-year-old son.

Wong, who worked in the finance industry, is believed to have been in the Pyne Gould Guinness building in Christchurch city center, which collapsed during the earthquake last week.

The death toll so far stands at 148, but hope is quickly fading for the dozens more buried under the rubble of the collapsed buildings of the South Island city.

Rescue teams have had to contend with aftershocks as they search for remains. The last survivor was rescued last Wednesday, although the search continues for an Irishman.

Originally from Kerry, JJ O’Conor has been missing since the quake struck when the building he was working in collapsed.

A spokesman from the Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said the Irish man’s body has not been found as of yet.
