I read that earlier....Do the LSC's give reasons for their decision? Have they ever exercised their discretion in favour of an application for compassionate release..and if so on what grounds...?What were the precedents/case law...Are the lawyers whoever they are going to take this to the Divisional Court...? Have they contacted Human Rights lawyers..? If so who?
Just to let you all know that the Commissioners today denied Brendan's Compassionate Parole, so he is now sadly condemned to die in prison, the campaign will continue right to the bitter end and beyond, thankyou for helping to highlight Brendan's tragic plight, Eddie Travers.
The mainstream Irish press is not reporting this story neither are Irish Journalists taking up the matter on twitter when asked to do so...Clearly the Justice Minister is not goting to exercise his discretion in Mr Lillis' favour the Campaign/ers should petition the SoS Owen Patterson..take the campaign to Westminister protest peacefully on College Green outside the Palace of Westminister where the English Press camp out every day...Perhaps UN Human Rights Ambassador Mary Robinson would like to do something about Human Rights abuses her own backyard for once...?
'Compassion' is not in the vocabulary of the NI Regime, as far as their concerned they don't release 'Bonafied Republicans' until their carried out in a box. Perhaps we should ask our representatives in Stormont to come to our aid, but, no their to busy cashing their paychecks and receiving accolades from their 'Masters' to come to the aid of former comrades.
Maghaberry is a hole in hell, one of the worst prisons in Europe, this man needs to be with his family for the little time he has left...
Auvaghey:Must have NI Assembly politicians have been petitioning David Ford for Mr Lillis' immediate release again today. NI criteria are effectively the same but slightly different wording...wouldn't you know...Minister can exercise powers 'at any time in exceptional circumstances'...I'm trying to get chapter and verse...
themurphia - were these powers devolved to the Northern Ireland Justice Minister David Force (Alliance Party) as well?
It`s nothing like internement - he was released early because of the peace process - he had not served all of his term - he was released on licence which means you are on good behaviour and if you are not then you are returned to jail to serve the rest of your term - several Loyalist paramilitaries have also had their licence revoked and returned to jail to serve the rest of their original jail term.
Its like internment without trial all over again!!!!
The compassionate release scheme is in the gift of the Secretary of State...The criteria is that the prisoner must have less than 3 months to live and no longer be considered a danger to the public...As I understand it Mr Lillis suffers from ankylosing Spondylitis a degenerative musculo skeletal condition...I understand there is a robust campaign and NI politicians are making representations on Mr Lillis' behalf...The comment posted on Niall O'Dowd's site stated this man was given less than 10 days to live some days ago...I made contact with several organisations and referred them to Mr Lillis' campaign...I trust the SoS will review his decision in accordance with the available information and exercise his discretion accordingly.
Let this long suffering man out! From what I've read, Maghaberry Prison is an over-crowded H*ll on earth!
Thank you Cathy sincerely for highlighting Brendan's case , the world needs to hear the truth, and please also pass on my thanks also to Niall for giving me a sympathetic ear. I'm sure you will win a stack of friends from Brendans supporters , and I'd also like to commend you all on a very good publication , thankyou all - Eddie Travers
