A new survey has revealed that one in four gay people in Northern Ireland have complained about homophobia in the work place. This report comes out just after the High Court has quashed an adjudication that an ad proclaiming sodomy is an "abomination" was homophobic.

The survey carried out by Rainbow Project pains shows a picture of widespread homophobia in workplaces across Ireland. One in four working in the private sector has experience homophobia. In the community or voluntary sector 31 percent of gay people have reported derogatory comment. This figure rose to 40 percent in the public sector and 42.5 percent in private business.

John O'Doherty, the Rainbow Project's director told the Guardian "This report provides the evidence base for what it is like for LGB people in work in Northern Ireland. It also provides the business case for acting to make the situation better. Government, employers and the Rainbow Project have considerable work to do in that regard."

With relation to the court case concerning the advertisement Mr Justice Treacy said the Advertising Standards Authority's decision had disproportionately interfered with Sandown Free Presbyterian Church's rights to freedom of expression.

The case centered on a full-page advertisement taken ahead of the Gay Pride parade in Belfast, August 2008. It's headline read "The word of God against sodomy" and it invited people to meet for a peaceful Gospel witness against sodomy.

The minister of the Belfast Church, Rev. David McIlveen, called the result in the case a landmark ruling enabling Biblical scripture to be quoted.

The judge said "The applicant's religious views and the Biblical scripture which underpins those views no doubt cause offence, even serious offence, to those of a certain sexual orientation.

“Likewise, the practice of homosexuality may have a similar effect on those of a particular religious faith.

“But Article 10 (of the European Convention on Human Rights) protects expressive rights which offend, shock or disturb.

“Moreover, Article 10 protects not only the content and substance of information but also the means of dissemination, since any restriction on the means necessarily interferes with the right to receive and impart information.”

IndividualOO You make my argument when you say only one sperm fertlises the ovum, therefore to deliberately kill all the sperm violates violates the commandment.
Mr jamthecat you are exactly wrong. You imply that trspit 'attacked' homosexual people. trspit did no such thing. Rather trspit told you in simple terms what he/she believes and you confirmed the difficulties non-homophobic hetros have with the aggressive activist nature of some homosexual groups. To Whit - they are permitted to say or do whatever they want, but no-one is allowed to disagree with them - even when it is couched in respectful terms. Homosexuality is certainly not normal and has not been seen in other animal species. That too is nonsense. What was your source for such an allegation? If it were absolutely normal, how on earth would we procreate? That said, it is NOT satisfactory for people who identify as homosexual to be discriminated against. You would be well-served to realise that when you attack non-homophobes who do not agree with your opinions, you aide those who are truely homophobic by alienating a sector of society that would otherwise assist you in standing up for your human rights - whether they agree with you or not.
@jcaulfield - what has the commandment 'you may not kill' got to do with sodomy? If you mean because it causes sperm to 'die' then your argument is extremely flawed as vaginal intercourse has exactly the same effect. If an egg is fertalised due to vaginal intercourse that's only one sperm out of thousands, all the rest die. Often conception does not even occur and thus all the sperm die.
That should read "ignorance".
Whether you think homosexuality is wrong or not is irrelevant. Gay people will never go away because straight people keep making them. Religion is a choice your sexuality is not. One more thing. Sodomy isn't just a gay thing. Heteros have anal sex too. When you reduce gay people to just being a specific sex act you're just showing your irnorance.
We all know that life exists in all its glory within the male and female before conception, if it did not, conception could not take place. The commandment 'You may not kill' applies to life at every stage. Christians believe that any practice, sexual or otherwise, that destroys human life is a violation of this commandment.
Being homosexual IS normal. It's how some people have been born since the beginning of time. It's been found to exist in just about every animal species. It's people like trspit80 who make it an issue with their attacks on gays and their demands that gay men and women be treated like second class citizens. Why should it matter who you love? Why is it anybody's business but the two people involved? Attacking someone because they were born homosexual is the same as attacking someone because they were born black or Jewish or Catholic or Protestant or just in the wrong part of town.
Homophobia is a term created by the gay community as a term to vilify those who consider homosexuality to be morally repugnant. Just because people do not believe that homosexuality is a viable "alternative" lifestyle does not mean they "fear" it. Truly, the term "homophobe" should translate as "fear of man?" And, as much as "gays" (happy people?) would like to continue their lobby to make us believe that their lifestyle falls within the bounds of "normal," really, drop the political correctness crap, and ask yourself if you believe it to truly be normal. I don't "hate" gay people. I actually have gay friends. Neither do I "fear" them. I merely am resistant to the push for "race" status being applied to sexual preference.
AH,SHUR: How often do you hear the Irish say how much they miss the 'Old Sod'!
