The News of the World has printed its final edition amid speculation of a massive sale of over three million papers in Britain – but staff in Ireland still don’t know what the future holds.

The Irish edition of the Rupert Murdoch publication employed 22 full-time staff and 10 part-time freelances at its Dublin office before the paper was closed in reaction to the British phone hacking scandal.

Like its UK counterpart, the Irish edition published a bumper final edition after 168 years of publishing, with all proceeds going to charity.

The last ever News of the World appeared on newsstands on Sunday morning with the headline ‘Thank You & Goodbye.’

The edition includes a full-page apology for the actions of those responsible for the hacking of phones belonging to murder victims and dead British servicemen amongst others.

The page three apology states: “We praised high standards, we demanded high standards but, as we are now only too painfully aware, for a period of a few years up to 2006 some who worked for us, or in our name, fell shamefully short of those standards.

“Quite simply, we lost our way. Phones were hacked, and for that this newspaper is truly sorry.”

The final edition of the newspaper also carried a quotation by George Orwell on its back page, which reads: “It is Sunday afternoon, preferably before the war. The wife is already asleep in the armchair, and the children have been sent out for a nice long walk. You put your feet up on the sofa, settle your spectacles on your nose, and open the News of the World.”

The print run in Britain and Ireland was doubled to five million copies with money from the sales to be donated to four charities.

A sub-headline in the 8,674th edition of the tabloid reads: "After 168 years, we finally say a sad but very proud farewell to our 7.5m loyal readers."

And in the top right corner are the words: "The world’s greatest newspaper 1843-2011."

The closing issue features much celebration of the best scoops and greatest campaigns that helped the newspaper make its mark over the years.

The paper was closed by Murdoch’s News International in wake of the phone hacking scandal which is ongoing in the UK.

Murdoch is due to fly into London on Sunday to address the crisis but he remains steadfast in his defence of chief executive Rebekah Brooks, editor of the News of the World at the height of the phone hacking activities.

The paper is also fighting allegations that it paid British police for information.

Meanwhile, Andy Coulson, the former News of the World editor and more recently advisor to British Prime Minister David Cameron, has been released by police in London.

Coulson was arrested on Friday on "suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications and on suspicion of corruption allegations."

Searlit ..I share your concern. There definitely has been an “intentional” media dumbing of America while also pandering to people's fears and biases. News Corp’s Murdoch and Ailes are brilliant at deflecting attention away from real issues while they deliver for their conservative corporate interests. I've been watching Euronews (cable 103) today and they have been continually mentioning the lack of coverage of this criminal activity by News Corp. on Fox and also the weak attention paid by the Wall St Journal. One European reporter outright stated that Fox News was “just propaganda”. Here in America Fox has so many incredibly misinformed and worried that their president wasn’t American, while the real threat to America was this Aussie who became an American just so he could control the largest slice of media in the world.
It sounded good to me, too. I wonder, just how many people care, though. As luxefaire said it's been going on for quite awhile now. When I talk to people about some of the freedoms that we citizens have lost, as well as the widespread mis-information we receive from the media now, they seem totally unaware. They've been hearing the lies, for so long they don't know the truth when they hear it, anymore. Oh, maybe I'm just having a bad day. I'm glad you're out there Mac.
Searlit, Sounds good to me
This type of spying activity is much more prevalent than most people know. It has been going on in America for well over ten years, more like twenty, the exact same behaviour that murdochs people have engaged in. The type of foolish Americans who depend on their televisions for information are legion here, and they cannot seem to come to grips with the fact that their boy george bush (DUHHHHHH-bya) destroyed privacy (along with many other things)while building his police state for his masters in England...the blood-sucking tea party people are just trying to legitimize their ignorance, it is not American to worship lords nor kings, it is not American to take the worlds goods by force (That is called theft you lazy pieces of garbage), it is not American to artificially drive up drug prices with legislation and the largest prison INDUSTRY in the world, but they all think they are patriots because they are arroant, egotistical, and most of all: dumb as shoes. This media spying bust could not have happened to a more deserving schmuck but the activities are quite well developed and have literally run amok here in America where everyone is either a policeman or a terrorist. The activity of spying has especially been propagated in the christian cults, the so-called faith based society, which is the new ss.
Yes, America needs to pull the plug on Fox (Faux) News! Shysters should be shipped back to their own countries shores. Let's start a clean up America campaign, Mac.
Murdoch, like the wizard of Oz, stands behind the curtain, pulling the strings that know no ethical boundary, all in a quest for greater greed. In England,David Cameron stood up and confronted this old shyster for "his" company's criminal practices. Who in America will take the place of David Cameron and confront the manipulative shysters behind the Murdoch run Fox TV and Roger Ailes who pulls the strings of smear, lies and manipulation in this country. News Corp is a blight to ethical journalism and the world would be a far better place without them manipulating reality.
