A furious row has broken out in Ireland over the State paying some $20M to bring 12 American college students to Ireland.

Mayo TD Michael Ring could barely contain his fury on the Pat Kenny show Thursday.

"That $20m would build four schools in Mayo," he said.

"Somebody's priorities are very wrong to be giving away $20 million of Irish money when we can't afford it."

Ring was referring to the George Mitchell scholarships which are awarded annually by the U.S.-Ireland Alliance.

But Ring was at pains to point out he was not criticizing Mitchell, who played a major role in the Northern Ireland peace process.

"I'm not having a go at George Mitchell," he said.

"This is about $20 million of Irish money when we can't afford it."

The Mitchell Scholarships are a particularly divisive issue in Ireland at the moment as funding for special needs is being slashed to the bone and schools are seeing funding cut.

On the one hand, champions like Trina Vargo from the U.S.-Ireland Alliance say they're a net benefit for Ireland.

But others, like Ring, aren't convinced of the value.

Is Trinity college tuition that high??.. I'd think again, if I was you.... or go pay it if you are that much in need to learn economics... the hard way. Did they remove the math requirement from irish schools too? saints preserve us!
,What is the complete story??? Even here in the US it doesn't cost $20,000,000 (million) dollars to pay for twelve (12) students to attend college for four years. Correct me if my math is wrong, but, $20 million divided by 12 = $1,666,666 per student. 666 is the Devils number, and I suspect he is behind this scheme.
It seems this article is incomplete. 20 million for 12 students to study in Ireland? 200,000 could pay 12 students 4 year degrees. So is it really 20 million the state is paying for 12 students?
It depends on what Ireland gets out of the deal. If the Americans get a degree and go back to the USA, it's a great deal of money for a little goodwill.
