Under sweeping new Alabama immigration laws, public schools will be required to determine the citizenship status of all students and it will be deemed a crime to transport a known illegal immigrant.
The new laws, due to come into affect September 1, will also give police the power to arrest any person they stop, if they suspect they have violated immigration laws.
The new immigration bill is being heralded as the toughest crackdown in the nation. Republican governor Robert Bentley signed the new bill into law on Thursday.
“We have a real problem with illegal immigration in this country,” Bentley said at the bill signing. “I campaigned for the toughest immigration laws, and I’m proud of the legislature for working tirelessly to create the strongest immigration bill in the country.”
Alabama is home to an estimated 120,000 illegal immigrants according to the Pew Hispanic Center.
Reacting to the new bill, immigration advocates described it as “racist."
“It is clearly unconstitutional. It’s mean-spirited, racist, and we think a court will enjoin it,” said Mary Bauer, legal director for the Southern Poverty Law Center, The Associated Press reported.

Good for Alabama !! God Bless America !!
seanomelbourne | Jun 18, 2011, 09:16 PM EDT
allentown you fail to answer my first line it is you whom are moribund in this debate.
maloney | Jun 18, 2011, 08:02 PM EDT
Do you not understand that illegals stop people from all countries around the world from coming to America? Drastic over population will end up making America look like Europe. Of coarse that was your intention in the first place. Liberals always cry bigot when they have no leg to left to stand on.
allentown | Jun 18, 2011, 11:46 AM EDT
January 21, 2013 will be the beginning of the end of illegal aliens in the USA. You were offering a discussion until you knew you had nothing further to offer and then you lost it all with " is there another agenda?" I am sure we will cross swords again on this topic since Irish Central knows it stirs the blood.
seanomelbourne | Jun 17, 2011, 10:55 PM EDT
If your proposal was feasible why has it not been adopted by your politicians on both sides. All you are saying is send them back and then let them return when they have papers you'll still have millions of immigrants on US soil a piece of paper.Give them the piece of paper and stabilize the intake of future immigrants or is their another agenda here dare I speak it.
allentown | Jun 17, 2011, 02:12 PM EDT
Seanomelbourne you keep trying to use sound bites "no government will send back millions" when you know right well that with no work, millions will return voluntary. What is 17% of 50 States? Then you use generalties "an honest bi-partisan policy may be the best way forward". What is in the bi-partisan policy? I'll be the right wing and you be the left wing. My position is: 1) Mandatory E-Verify for all businesses, which legally eliminates all work opportunities for illegal aliens, 2) elimination of santuary cities, 3) no pathway to citizenship for illegal aliens, and 4) over a period of five years, all illegal aliens return home and get on the line to enter the USA legally.
seanomelbourne | Jun 16, 2011, 09:31 PM EDT
You seem to be missing or ignoring the point Allentown if they cannot work they would not leave home. The illegal population fell overall not just in Arizona.I acknowledge that that there is a problem with illegal immigrants,it's how to fix the problem seems to be the dilemma. As I said previously no government left or right will send back millions of illegals.Sealing the border does not seem to stop the flow and then we forget the thousands who travel by air.An honest bipartisan policy may be the best way forward.
allentown | Jun 16, 2011, 10:54 AM EDT
Seanomelbourne, You are right when you pointed out that George W. Bush being a pro-amnesty advocate had to be pulled and dragged to enforce our immigration laws late in his Presidency. If as you claim "it is not feasible" is not a sound bite, then explain how in one year the illegal alien population fell by 17% (92,000) after Arizona instituted the E-Verify (employee verification system). If as you claim, sending the illegal aliens home is right wing hypocrisy, then it appears the left wing has abrogated its responsibility to our weakest employable by supporting a pathway to citizenship for all illegal aliens and pushing our weakest employable further into poverty.
seanomelbourne | Jun 15, 2011, 08:10 PM EDT
The immigrants were not chased back across the border under Bush.Allentown "it's not feasible" is not a sound bite.If they had no jobs to go to why would they bother coming in the first place. Was it not Arizona who passed (or tried ) to pass a law to send illegals back except domestic servants? maybe I have the incorrect state please enlighten me. What right wing hypocrisy do we have here.
maloney | Jun 15, 2011, 06:09 PM EDT
If the Alabama illegals law were to be enforced no deportation would be needed. The illegals would run back across the border like cockroaches in the light. Then the terrorists would be much easier to see and catch with all the spanish speaking gone. Closing the boarder still must be a priority. As far as the demise of the Republic goes, as long as obama is in the White House we will continue to go downhill. obama will be a one term predident and all will be right with the world once again.
Brolaur | Jun 15, 2011, 03:52 PM EDT
As long as the US Gov. keeps GITMO open and still practises rendition, surely it has no right to speak about Justice. The US Gov.(NOT TO BE CONFUSED WITH The US CITIZENRY)seems to believe that the End Justifies The MEANS eg waterboarding. We are watching demise of The Republic USA.
allentown | Jun 15, 2011, 12:25 PM EDT
Seanomelbourne, your sound-bite "it's not feasible" is just that. In 2013, those supporters of illegal aliens who say the hell with our weakest employable will face a Romney administration that will make E-Verify (employee verification) mandatory for all businesses. Isn't it ironic that the pro-amnesty supporters who blame the greedy employers for the illegal alien problem also oppose this E-Verify legislation. I guess it's because "it's not feasible".
seanomelbourne | Jun 15, 2011, 01:47 AM EDT
Allen your 22million is not a credible number. No government left or right will expel 7 million illegal immigrants it is not feasible.your Right wing friends will not allow their cheap labor to slip through their bling soaked fingers. It beggars belief that a so called first world country would allow a base rate of about $7 an hr and pay illegals even less.I believe you should spend your time writing to your politicians to lift the living standards of ordinary Americans by lifting the 3rd. world base rate you are paid.
allentown | Jun 14, 2011, 07:44 PM EDT
Isn't it ironic that the pro-amnesty posters on this board always say that: "Immigration is a complex problem". What is complex about illegal aliens go home? I previously posted that NumbersUSA points out that we have upwards of 22 million citizens unemployed, under-employed, or have given-up hope of ever finding a job. Today 7 million illegal aliens hold jobs in the USA that are not in agricultural, such as construction. The pro-amnesty posters maintain illegal aliens should be given a pathway to citizenship and they should keep those 7 million jobs and to hell with the weakest employable in our country.
seanomelbourne | Jun 14, 2011, 12:05 AM EDT
I'll try again Maloney. I take umbrage at your comments that I am jealous of the USA. We here in OZ have a standard of living you yanks could only hope for.You are fed a daily dose of God/country and guns from the cradle to the grave and you just cannot move on(remember the bubble). The big picture alludes you as it doe's Allentown. It may seem strange to you but the countries with the best quality of life have left of centre governments.
seanomelbourne | Jun 13, 2011, 11:57 PM EDT
Comment pulled?
maloney | Jun 13, 2011, 10:37 PM EDT
Now ya finally show a little of the truth for a change. There are very few countries who claim to be socialist even though there are many who are. Along with marxist, facist, communist ect. ect. We are less than 5% of the population but own most of the worlds wealth. We are the newest country in the world and the most free. You envy America for who and what we are. I would resent America also if I were you. The rest of the world has been at it for thousands of years and this upstart country surpasses every thing that has come before. We were barely started when we kicked the crap out of the strongest country on the planet. The same England who still owns part of your home land. There have been two world wars and we won both of em. That's why people like you and Ireland hate people like Palin. She represents every thing you hate about us. That's also why you and Ireland kiss obama's arse. You see him as your hope of leveling the field. Jealousy is a horrible thing. The main thing for you to always remember is that we will always be better than you. Get over it. Read allentown's post below. That should give ya another worm fuzzy fealing and it is exactly what's going to happen.
seanomelbourne | Jun 13, 2011, 07:54 PM EDT
Your living in a very fragile bubble maloney, your insular comments beggars belief. No government is perfect. There are very few countries which banner themselves as socialist. It's not all about America, you make up less than 5% of the world's population and you want all it's wealth and trickle down the balance you don't need to whom ever.
allentown | Jun 13, 2011, 12:12 PM EDT
2012 could be a complete reversal of 2008. After we elected a Democratic President and a Democratic Congress in 2008, the illegal aliens thought they would surely get amnesty. Now, we may have the complete reversal in 2012. A Republican President and a Republican Congress and the illegal aliens going home. With NumbersUSA putting our total unemployment, under-employment and those who have given up all hope of finding a job at 22 million, this might be a good time for illegal aliens to leave now and avoid the January, 2013 rush to the door.
maloney | Jun 13, 2011, 02:45 AM EDT
Roolands gov. may be perfect to you but the American gov. is anything but. Prepared not paranoid. In order to fix poverty you will have to control every government and military in the world. You keep living in Oz and I'll deal with the reality of living in a free country that is under attack from within and outside. Socialism has never worked and never will, you can't take out the human factor and theories don't put food on the table but ya can keep on dreaming.
seanomelbourne | Jun 12, 2011, 11:55 PM EDT
You live in a paranoid world Maloney in one sentence it's the lefts fault and in the next both parties are to blame.Throwing food to the starving millions is band aid stuff.AS long as there is poverty we will have mass migrations and that is an historical fact.Party affiliations are irrelevant and only a will to fight poverty will break the cycle.
maloney | Jun 12, 2011, 10:07 PM EDT
Two wrongs don't make a right but I watched repeated episodes of the Pelosi/Reid House and Senate lock the doors so the Repubs. couldn't get in the chamber when the Dems were in control of both branches. When the locks were picked the Dems. got up and snuck out the back doors. Tell the whole story, not just the parts that suits you. Rich nations are a part of the problem but the rich nations donate tons of food and mountains of money yearly. Why this doesn't work is that the poor countries don't have honest elections or are dictatorships or ran by the militaries ect. ect. and the goods never get to the entended. It's been going on forever. There is no fixing this problem. A mass grave has been found on our side of the border and the victims were mostly children. The Irish aren't raping and killing or smuggling humans and drugs. It's the little fellas from south of the border. That isn't all that's coming across the border and you know it. As for who wants it all his way look no further than obama. Since day one he and his cohorts have done everything in their power to get the right to do something violent. It hasn't worked. The left has committed many acts of violence in the mean time and his Highness hasn't opened his mouth. In fact he has egged it on. One way or another it is going to come to a head eventually as the left will do whatever it takes to make it happen. I gave up trying to have rational conversations with lefties a long time ago. They are just like you, it's never their fault and they want it ALL their way. NO compromise! Don't blame it on the right when the shooting starts. It won't be me who fires the first shot. Now we can get back to the old fighting as usual. In this day and age it's the easier thing to do. It's up to you seano.
seanomelbourne | Jun 12, 2011, 09:16 PM EDT
The GOP refuse to sit down with the dems to form a non-partisan solution to immigration, as the President said they want it all their way.You are probably right Maloney that both parties hold some blame, but demonizing those who cross the border is not helpful.Immigration is a world problem maybe a world solution like eliminating poverty would be a good start. But the rich nations want it all and to hell with the rest .Thus creating a global poverty trap. The more one ponders the question of immigration the more complex it becomes.
allentown | Jun 12, 2011, 03:16 PM EDT
when it comes to discussing illegal immigration in the USA, you can always rely on Plasticpaddy to attack the messenger and not the message. Definitly, a protege of Rachael Maddow.
maloney | Jun 12, 2011, 01:59 PM EDT
seano..do ya drink it hot or cold? This past week another rancher was shot to death on his own property on the border. He was 68 years old. Between Weinergate and Palin the real problems facing America will never be addressed. Both political parties are guilty. If we can't control (or refuse to) our own borders how can we expect to get anything else done.
Springfield9 | Jun 12, 2011, 01:21 PM EDT
Illegal immigration to the United States is a CIVIL CRIME. Hence, these individuals are Criminal Immigrants. They have no right to be in this country (although they claim rights to 5 Western States).
OrenTruitt | Jun 12, 2011, 10:24 AM EDT
Illegal immigrants are criminals. Anyone helping them is aiding and abetting. If they are refugees, they can file for legitimate status. Illegal immigrants come into the US, get free medical care from taxpayer supported hospitals, go to taxpayer supported schools, collect welfare, get food stamps, collect every FREE benefit they can while the majority of them work for cash, pay no taxes (except sales taxes they can't avoid) and many are involved in criminal activities including prostitution and drug trafficing. It is beyond time the states started cracking down on it since the federal gooberment refuses to do anything.
GeorgeDillon | Jun 12, 2011, 06:04 AM EDT
I would say some of our boss class in the US is on the same page as their Irish counterparts. Check out this partial quote from a recent Irish newspaper story: ----: "A company involved in a bitter industrial relations dispute in Co Tipperary is hiring migrant workers because the owner claims they are more efficient and less likely to be absent than Irish workers. Martin Sheahan, owner of waste-disposal company Mr Binman, has infuriated members of the Siptu trade union by claiming that: “We need to put manners on the Paddies. The Paddy is the best man in the world when he goes abroad to work but he’s a different man at home.” He made the comments during a recent interview with the Irish Farmer’s Journal."
GeorgeDillon | Jun 12, 2011, 05:54 AM EDT
Momma Ginnty: So you are telling us that you think it's a good idea for Ireland to attract foreign criminals to the point where one in three of its prison population is foreign? Just what kind of a looney tune are you?
seanomelbourne | Jun 12, 2011, 01:03 AM EDT
Holier than thou attitude kris. Maloney hope you like Aussie beer.
krisdaly | Jun 12, 2011, 12:47 AM EDT
Illegal immigrants break America's laws, collect welfare, exploit our Republic, and their loyalty is to their home countries. They use their "anchor babies" by giving birth to them in the USA so that they can't be expelled from our country. Our border MUST BE SEALED so the flood of illegal immigrants does not continue to undermine the fabric of our Country. There is nothing "racist" in my statement, but it is fact. Love your neighbor!!
maloney | Jun 11, 2011, 10:40 PM EDT
Your spare room seano. Not to worry, he won't be. But just in case my main home is harder to get at and better armed than Tora Bora ever was.
seanomelbourne | Jun 11, 2011, 09:25 PM EDT
When Obama is re-elected Maloney where will you move to?
maloney | Jun 11, 2011, 09:18 PM EDT
John5319...It's nice to see someone who takes the time to learn what made America and learn the laws of the Republic. Then you have the trash who would destroy everything America stands for. It's a wonderful thing to know that 2012 will finish what was started in 2010. Laws will be followed and the constitution will once again be the law of the land. Come on over seano, I'll be glad to give ya a ride and your plastic(cow)paddy too.
seanomelbourne | Jun 11, 2011, 08:34 PM EDT
If it's illegal to give them a ride charge the cops who pick them up for giving them a ride. Racist drivel from racists whites Alabama are at it again, remember Birmingham and George Wallace.Nothing changes in the trailer park state.
mamaginnty | Jun 11, 2011, 05:05 PM EDT
Ah, he just could not help himself, bet he jumped right out of his chair when someone mentioned Ireland. "yea" he shouts with glee, " time to hang the irish again, and I can blame it on some other nationality " and runs to his keyboard. Wishfull thinking ( I hope he trips on the run and falls on his big fat mouth )...well I can dream can't I.
GeorgeDillon | Jun 11, 2011, 03:40 PM EDT
Some one mentioned Ireland. Worth mentioning that fully one in three inmates in Irish jails are foreign migrants. The Irish think they have to import criminals on an equal opportunity basis.
feeneycj | Jun 11, 2011, 03:38 PM EDT
sorry to hear of your friends loss teadoir. kudos to Alabama.
plasticpaddy | Jun 11, 2011, 03:01 PM EDT
John5319 it's a shame that wherever you were educated let you down so badly! You clearly don't understand those things you criticise!
plasticpaddy | Jun 11, 2011, 02:59 PM EDT
Maloney you horrible horrible small minded individual
maloney | Jun 11, 2011, 01:57 PM EDT
HOORAA TO ALABAMA!!!
Nicomax | Jun 11, 2011, 12:41 PM EDT
Only a 120,000 s0-called illegals in Alabama? Heck, they have almost that many law breakers on their various college athletic teams in that state.
jdi2269 | Jun 11, 2011, 12:19 PM EDT
WAY TO GO ALABAMA!
John5319 | Jun 11, 2011, 12:09 PM EDT
For a "public institution", that is supported by Taxpayers dollars, to comply with a State Law ... IS WHAT the Spirit of Federalism was meant by the founding fathers and our 10th amendment! Illegals ARE criminals first, citizens last !! ... That is why we DO HAVE, like all other nations of the World, laws that PROTECT the sovereign citizens of those nations. That is why the have foreign embassies here, to protect it's citizens. Furthermore, for those in this administration to use the term "social justice" for all, we MUST remember that that was a term used by the National Socialist Workers Party, the NAZI's, and should have NO PLACE in America's "equal opportunity" education system. Equal opportunity IS NOT equal results, but it is the language of those political elitists who use "race bait" tactics and use the "class warfare" of Karl Marx. Alabama rules over the deceit of "the Evil ones"!
teadoir | Jun 11, 2011, 11:20 AM EDT
Congrats Alabama, we have no idea who is coming into our borders. My friends 18 year old daughter was murdered by an illegal and burned alive in the trunk of her car after taking her from a residence. How do we know if they have criminal backgrounds such as this animal unless they go thru the process. WAKE UP, THESE PEOPLE ARE ILLEGAL AND DON'T WANT TO FOLLOW AN PROCESS THAT WILL MAKE THEM GIVE FULL HONEST DISCLOSURE ON THEIR BACKGROUND. I pay a heavy tax on my income and the services I fund are being destroyed by these people that is why most of the people I know have pulled their kids out of the public schools and are sacrificing to pay for private school. Half of them can't speak English and are sitting in high school classrooms in America according to the teachers I've spoken to.
Pittsburghkid | Jun 11, 2011, 10:20 AM EDT
In Ireland you have migrants from other countries, while Irish have to leave Ireland, because of poor wages. Doesn't this idiot site see a corralation, between low wages an illegal aliens? It is a crime to break the immigration laws. How about the immigration laws of Mexico? They are worst then any American Law.
cillowen | Jun 11, 2011, 10:16 AM EDT
such an edict wouldn't fly in and around hasidic communities. their settlements keep growing birth rates out of sight - no way jose.
colkelley | Jun 11, 2011, 09:46 AM EDT
Not just Alabama, but many other states and enacting laws because the Federal government fails to enforce LAWS regarding immigration. I personally do not care from what country someone came here to be an illegal alien, he or she is still breaking the law and needs to be apprehended and deported. The law does and should favor those who have the integrity to become legal immigrants. The main focus of the DemoRats is to find some way to legalize millions of criminals (being an illegal alien makes you a criminal) so they can vote to keep them in office without having the trouble of getting them to vote illegally. That is the real reason why they are not enforcing immigration laws and why the states must act to protect citizens and legal immigrants.
antoman | Jun 11, 2011, 09:17 AM EDT
Not that I'm planning to go to Alabama illegally but I can do a pretty good Alabama accent.
