They should all be elevated. With a swift boot up the rear end.

Reporting the insignificant hierarchical minutae of an increasiongly irrelevant institution is surely indulgent. Reading about the elevation of these theocrats is as exciting as that of the old Soviet Politburo - and equally as undemocratic. Down with all tyrannies, religious or otherwise.

His statement on June 19 2011 comes to mind re marriage equality bill comes to mind.
The Vatican is made up of "happy people", elevating him to cardinal nothing will change. Marriage to Christ in those circumstances and same sex marriages is no different as far as I can see.
One just has to change their mindset.

Odd that just about the most obviously camp organisation in the world should be so anti-gay. The organisation itself has probably thousands of gay men and women in its ranks. As for Rome- well, basically it is the Blue Oyster Bar of all cities.

The Vatican announced the elevation of three North American Cardinals yesterday and they all happen to be of Irish descent: Cardinal Timothy Dolan of NY, Cardinal Ed O'Brien of Baltimore and Jerusalem, and Cardinal Thomas Collins of Toronto. You might have thought this that would be the lead story at "Irish" Central. But no, the lead story today is about how Michelle Obama didn't get on well with Rahm Emmanuel in the White House. Oh well, I guess they know what they're doing.

The Catholic Church is a criminal enterprise that should be investigated under the RICO act for hiding the rapes of boys and girls by its priests, then giving those rapist priests further access to children in other communities, then fighting against the revelation of those actions, not just in the US and Ireland, but all over the world.

This is typical of the negative spin which IC columnists put on any decision by the Catholic Church regarding appointments or decisions which go against their ideological bias. There is no conspiracy here. Ireland already has two red hats in the Vatican and thus on account of the Church being a global organization and the reality of multiple candidates for the limited number of Cardinal posts from more populous countries, it was deemed that Ireland has a fitting number of cardinals at this particular time.

Might be able to afford to get married now after all. Wonder does the system of Cardinals getting the collection plate from a certain Sunday every month to go towards their 'funeral expenses'? You'd think in the 21st century we'd be free in the west of these Middle Ages witchdoctors in dresses. The truth is these nutters would have far more in common with the Taliban than they would with western democracy and freedoms. A pox on them all.

Actually, New York already has one Cardinal at the Vatican, Edward Cardinal Egan. Timothy Cardinal Dolan will be New York's second. Is this the first time in centuries that Ireland has no Cardinals at the Vatican?
