However, he also spoke of hope for the future of Ireland and using the people of Ireland to rebuild the country.

He commented on how the Irish had changed over during the ‘Celtic Tiger’ period on commented on the positive changes in the community he had witnessed since the collapse of the economy.

“In more recent years, we saw the rise of a different kind of individualism - closer to an egotism based on purely material considerations - that tended to value the worth of a person in terms of the accumulation of wealth rather then their fundamental dignity. That was our loss, the source in part, of our present difficulties.”

However, he continued: ”Now it is time to turn to an older wisdom that, while respecting material comfort and security as a basic right of all, also recognizes that many of the most valuable things in life cannot be measured.

“Our successes after all in the eyes of so many in the world have been in the cultural and spiritual areas - in our humanitarian, peace-building and human rights work - in our literature, art, drama and song - and in how that drama and song have helped us cope with adversity, soothed the very pain which they describe so well, and opened the space for new possibilities.

“Our arts celebrate the people talking, singing, dancing and ultimately communing with each other. This is what James Connolly meant when he said that: "Ireland without her people means nothing to me.”

A good way would be to reach out to the internal diaspora who were diasporaised by history by exclusion in 1922. What better way than to appoint all the other presidential candidates to his Council of State, as well as northern nationalists and Ulster unionists/loyalists living/working in the south. A rainbow presidency indeed. what a dream!
As a member of the Diaspora I am tired of attempts at manipulation by Irish politicians who think it is clever to have a policy of enforced emigration and then pass the hat around among the successful Irish abroad whenever they embarrass us at home. It is long past time the Diaspora organised itself as a piper which calls at least some of the tunes at home. Don't sign any cheques or donations until real changes in governance are made. Irish Ministers are not the only ones who can operate a clandestine policy with regard to the Irish economy and Irish politics.
'Yer Man Michael D sounds like a good man. Y'all did good!!!!
I knew Michael D. should be elected when he knew the price of a stamp. I look forward as a newly recognized Irish descendant with my new Irish heritage certificate to continuing to celebrate Ireland's returning emphasis on the values that made the Irish what they are today.
You speak grand words Michael D.But if I didn't know better I'd say it's an engineered unspoken government policy to cast a few hundred thousand Irish people into the world every generation. It certainly improves Ireland's influence overseas.Brings back money and helps bring financial investment.
