New Irish leader has an identity crisis in the U.S. press

Ireland's Prime Minister Enda Kenny called "Ms Kenny", "Edna" and "Eddy" all in one week

Just a week after the new Irish Prime Minister, Enda Kenny, was referred to as "Ms. Kenny" in the New York Times the White House managed to refer to him as "Edna" and "Eddy" in the same breath.

Announcing the success of Kenny's St. Patrick's Day meeting the White House confirmed that President Obama had told "Edna Kenny" that he would visit Ireland this May. Their announcement then went on to say that "Eddy, dressed in dark suit and green tie, returned the kind words "Ireland is open for business."

They ended by saying "More from Eddy in next report."

It seems that Kenny cannot catch a break when it comes to the U.S. press getting his name right. Just one week ago the New York Times announced Kenny's take over as leader of the Irish Government.

They said "Ms. Kenny’s center-right Fine Gael party will now govern in a coalition with the center-left Labour Party." It seems that while the journalist based in London was aware of Kenny's gender the subeditor, in the New York Times, was not.

Hopefully now Kenny's trip to the U.S. has been deemed a success and he, and Vice Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affair Eamon Gilmore have been received so warmly, the press might avoid getting his name wrong quite so often.
