Movie and TV site Netflix reaches one million in Ireland faster than Twitter and Facebook
Film loving Irish lap up online streaming of movies and TV
Netflix, the American provider of on-demand Internet streaming of TV and movies, has reached their one million user milestone in UK and Ireland in just seven months. This is faster than any other territory where the service is available.
It is also four times faster that it took Twitter to reach one million globally and twice as fast as Facebook and Foursquare.
SiliconRepublic reports that Netflix chief executive Reed Hastings said, “This membership milestone is evidence that Netflix has rapidly gained popularity in the Ireland and the UK.
“Our British and Irish members clearly enjoy the ability to instantly watch a large variety of TV shows and films streaming from Netflix on their favorite devices whenever they want.”
As Ireland has the highest cinema-going rate in all of Europe, it’s no surprise that the movie loving Irish jumped right on board.
Netflix is available on over 800 devices. Research shows that consumers in the UK and Ireland spend over €700 a year on new electronic gear, according to YouGov. This means that it’s likely that most houses have at least one device that can stream TV shows and films from Netflix.
