Dublin's most famous lady ‘Molly Malone’ was invented to ridicule the Irish says a leading historian.

'Molly Malone,' the popular folk song about a beautiful fishmonger, was written in Edinburgh in 1883 by James Yorkston and may have been written  for comic purposes says Professor Daithi O hOgain, from University College Dublin.

"In the concert halls during the Victorian era, various races were ridiculed to a certain extent. 'Molly Malone' may have been composed in Scotland to mock Irish people and their songs," he said, according to the Irish Independent.

"I believe it was a comic song. It was not a tragic story, which was the theme in many Irish ballads."

In ‘'Scealta Atha Cliath,' a new TG4 series airing in Ireland, historical author Eoin Bairead agrees that the name Molly Malone was a moniker for a simple Irish girl in the 19th Century.

The song has become the unofficial anthem  of Dublin people and is sung at every major football game Dublin play and often also at Irish soccer and rugby matches.

@Conchubar: my apologies - I failed to see you had already posted that little gem!
That's ok. The Irish gave the Scottish the Bagpipes - and they still haven't gotten that joke.
Does it really matter now?
The Scottish have a sense of humor?
poor scots have liitle to crow about on the song front "Auld Lang Sye" "I belong to Glasgow" and such other few with irish airs. Sad.
The song is a favourite with supporters of Dublin soccer football club Bohemians (aka Bohs) and Leinster rugby football. The song is also sung by a few English soccer clubs e.g. Bolton Wanderers (neighbours and arch-enemies of Manchester Utd) and Huddersfield Town. When I, a Dubliner, lived in Scotland, I heard that the supporters of Scottish soccer clubs, St. Mirren and Berwick Rangers, also sang it. I wonder why and how come these soccer clubs do. Anyone got info on that? Maybe there’s some truth in a Scottish connection.
That's OK.....the Irish gave the Scots the bagpipes and they haven't caught on to the joke YET!
Yankee Doodle was made up by the British to mock Americans ...... we liked it ........ they heard it as they were leaving.
And here I thought the Scots just saw Ireland as a stopping-off place on their way to America. Leave it to the Irish to turn the joke around and make the song famous while the rest of the world wonders "Who is James Yorkston?"
Ridicule is like bullying viewing the victim as other than human. That has been put aside by the Irish, elevating Molly to a person of beauty.
Jaysus ,our own Celtic brother?
@KSERRAHN- Agreed.
Rise above and embrace it. Let the world know the Irish can take as well as give. And who doesn't like a good joke now and again
