Mitt Romney to meet Irish prime minister at London Olympics
GOP Presidential hopeful to travel to UK for opening of summer games
Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny is to meet GOP Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney this Friday at the opening of the London Olympics.
Governor Romney is in Britain for the opening of the London Olympic Games and, according to his campaign, “will meet with Irish Taoiseach Enda Kenny and U.S. Olympic athletes” on Friday.
"The Taoiseach's office was contacted by Governor Romney seeking a meeting. Arrangements for that are being finalised at the moment," a Government spokesman said.
The Irish Independent reports that the meeting will take place in London city center, possibly at the Irish Embassy.
In recent weeks, President Obama has slammed his GOP opponents for using Ireland has a “tax haven”.
The GOP candidate, who was chief executive of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, will attend a number of fundraising dinners organized by US expats to raise funds for his presidential campaign. His wife Ann co-owns Rafalaca, a horse that will compete in the Olympic dressage event.
Romney is using his overseas trip as an opportunity to burnish his foreign policy credentials - and reach out to major ethnic groups. In addition to meeting Kenny he will also visit Poland and Israel.
