The mother of Irish rock legend Phil Lynott has slammed American Presidential candidate Mitt Romney – and all but accused him of robbing her son’s music.
Philomena Lynott has slammed Romney and Paul Ryan’s use of the Thin Lizzy anthem ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ at his party’s convention in Tampa last weekend.
The Dublin woman is upset that her son’s music was used for political gain by the Republicans at their Florida event.
Ryan arrived onstage to the Thin Lizzy song written by Lynott’s late son.
His mother is incensed by Romney’s anti-gay marriage stance and is fuming that the music was used in Tampa.
The Irish Times reports that she told Hot Press magazine: “I am really upset at Philip’s music being used in a political way that he himself would not have approved of.
“As far as I’m concerned, Mitt Romney’s opposition to gay marriage and to civil unions for gays makes him anti-gay, which is not something that Philip would have supported.
“He had some wonderful gay friends, as indeed I do. They all deserve equal treatment in every respect, whether it be in Ireland or in the United States.
“Neither would Philip have supported his policy of taxing the poor and offering tax cuts to the rich, which Paul Ryan is advocating. There is certainly no way that I would want the Lynott name to be associated with any of these ideas.”
Lynott added: “Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about this except to express my views. A lot of fans and musicians are very angry about it, and I can understand why.”
Here's Phil Lynott and Thin Lizzy playing "The Boys are Back in Town" live:

REM now have warned Romney not to use their music
EphraimKibbey | Sep 07, 2012, 07:40 PM EDT
Well the DNC convention is over and I heard a lot of great music. So far none of the composers (or their mothers) have complained about the use of their creations by the Dems. I wonder what they are doing differently? Could it be that they simply asked permission before using someone else's stuff. How marxist, socialist, anti-capitalist is that? Or worse yet, they might have actually paid the artists ROYALITIES! Paying a fair price for a fair use - how unamerican. Ryan/Romney are horrified and worry that this kind of behavior might be catching.
seanomelb | Sep 06, 2012, 07:42 PM EDT
Most of the world is in decline it's simple shrinking markets shrinking opportunities. Except of course Australia,Canada,Brazil,Norway and a few other countries where the economies are thriving, But then they did not have the GOP to Fu#k up the economy in the first place and had controls on their banks. It really doesn't matter Briano the GOP will be lucky to hold the house and will loose seats in the senate.Obama can then complete the American dream for the middle class.4 more years
BrianO | Sep 06, 2012, 11:35 AM EDT
U.S. falls from 5th place in world competiveness to 7th place, the fourth straight year of decline. HMMM.. 4 years of Obama rule, 4 years of global decline of the U.S., just a coincidence? I think not.

Way to go Phil's mam, we still miss him and we know he'd still be as proud of you now as he was then.

A Mitt Romney presidency would be awesome unless you're poor, gay, Mexican, a woman, or a dog.

Oh go away you idiots, all of you.

Being against gays getting married does not make a person anti-gay. They can live together but the Bible says that a marriage is between a man and a woman and I believe what the Christian Bible says. I am not anti-gay --that is their personal choice -- so there !!
pilib04 | Sep 05, 2012, 03:12 PM EDT
Yeah, Ronald Reagan stole "Born in the USA" until his campaign found out he was the target!

seanomelb, always a fan of your polemics. in case you missed it, here are a few lines from Preacher Strickland's speech Tuesday night. Ted really hit his stride. Reminded me of the other Ted. “Mitt Romney, he lives by a different code. To him, American workers are just numbers on a spreadsheet. ” “Barack Obama is betting on the American worker. Mitt Romney is betting on a Bermuda shell corporation.” “Barack Obama saved the American auto industry. Mitt Romney saved on his taxes.”

@Kevin Kehoe, Please don't mis interpret my reference to heroin as a condemnation of Phil Lynott's music, I say that as a reminder to any world class artist to watch out for themselves. You would call me far right I'm sure, and I bought most of the Thin lizzy albums, and Phil's solo, they were great. I could spend all day talking music but I guess I'm not suppose to love it because of my political views. The funny thing is few on this sight know anything but their politacal view.
BrianO | Sep 05, 2012, 10:58 AM EDT
Seano, If the boys wanna fight you better let em, I'm heading down to Dino's, so all you that want to keep music to yourself should lighten up. later I might go dancing in the moonlight, cause it's got me in the spot light. I gotta go , it's two oclock in the morning and I'm on the streets tonight, disobeyed another warning I should have been in by ten. Mrs. Lynott I love you for not aborting Philip and allowing me to hear his great Rock music, to bad he killed himself on heroin, A real tragedy for music fans, time for a Jailbreak.
Dublinborn | Sep 05, 2012, 10:39 AM EDT
and in other news today its reported that Mrs Lizzy is not qualified to vote in any US Election and she can play the RNC anthem The Boys are Back in Town in Wed after the election.

Artists know what their work means, so of course they object to politicians misusing it against their intentions. In the Aug 16 "Rolling Stone" Tom Morello of Rage against the Machine lit into Paul Ryan after Ryan said Rage was one of his favorite bands. Morello said Ryan's "guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage." Any artists with any sense of cultural "message" would object as Morello did to politicians misusing their work to appeal to young voters: "I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta 'rage' in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions. You see, the super rich must rationalize having more than they could ever spend while millions of children in the U.S. go to bed hungry every night. So when they look themselves in the mirror, they convince themselves that 'Those people are undeserving. They're . . . lesser.'" Right on message! Ryan gave Morello a podium and a microphone.
deiseblue | Sep 05, 2012, 04:29 AM EDT
Musical taste is a very personal thing - personally I always thought that Phil Lynott was a genius ( comparable to Shane McGowan & Van Morrison ) & that Thin Lizzy were a great band , both live & in the studio. Would Phillo have contrary social & political views to Messrs Romney & Ryan - the answer to that would have been a pretty unequivocal yes I would have thought. Mrs. Lynott was quite within her rights to suggest that Phillo would not have been happy to see his music used in the context it was.
Tom Mo | Sep 04, 2012, 10:51 PM EDT
The worst part of the Republican Convention was that horrible F*&King music. Madam you should be thankful that sombody thought to play the crap.
misneac | Sep 04, 2012, 07:07 PM EDT
The arrogance of these "pop stars " ! They get publicity totally out of proportion to any contribution made to society .
borefield | Sep 04, 2012, 06:53 PM EDT
Ms. Lynott, no disrespect was shown to your son's music. In my mind playing your son's music was flattering. KevinKeogh, get over yourself, sounds to me like you may want to improve on your sense of decency.
merefalow | Sep 04, 2012, 06:28 PM EDT
what a great looking woman, great go for it lady.
seanomelb | Sep 04, 2012, 06:26 PM EDT
The usual teabagger anti women slu#s condemning a lady for having some integrity. Some never heard of Tin Lizzy so they vilify those who have. The gay hating/anti women lot better leave now Obama is there for 4 MORE YEARS.
hooligan6a | Sep 04, 2012, 06:22 PM EDT
Dan Breen, why are you so angry? They played a song, for God's sake. It's just a song. Ms. Lynott may . have class, but you don't. Go home and take your meds.
KevinKehoe | Sep 04, 2012, 06:00 PM EDT
[1]A well known Irish lady makes a perfectly legitimate comment about her sons work being used for political reasons, despite the fact a few morons below never herd of her. She wasn't abusive in her words nor did she insult anyone, she just expressed her right to comment. I assume most of the commenters on this site are Irish or of Irish decent, well my comments wont be lady-like or gentlemanly in defending P. Lynott and in response to the foul-mouthed muck written below. What happened to you people were you forced feed garbage by ultra right-wing republican War-Mong--s.
KevinKehoe | Sep 04, 2012, 05:41 PM EDT
[2]You probably believe all the bull $ your right-wing politicians tell you and there junk media write. Yet my experience in life tells me that not one of you foul-mouthed morons would say such words if you were face to face in the same room with the Irish mother who we are writing about. Because if you did and I was there I would certainly K you O [if you were male, females would be escorted out with the garbage disposal] as would most decent Irishmen. Shame on you mindless fools.
monkeyapplenerd | Sep 04, 2012, 05:30 PM EDT
Dear corporate robot Mitt and Ayn Rand worshiping Paul hands off Thin Lizzy and their music! And any other artist for that matter, no one wants to be associated with your nonsense pro-corporation, pro-rich, pro-fundamentalist christian campaign.

what the f are they saying sounds like the RR pair. Zeros.
irishimport | Sep 04, 2012, 05:16 PM EDT
I'm not surprised by anything the GOP says or does to get their message across . The funny thing about the American people seems to be that if a lie is told often enough it eventually becomes the truth which the GOP understands very well. As for stealing the properties of others including the rights of an artists music there seems to be no depths they will not go.
EphraimKibbey | Sep 04, 2012, 04:50 PM EDT
So all of you trashing this woman do not have mothers of YOUR own? I thought you were better that that! Now let's look at some facts. This was copyright infringement and was therefore a criminal act. This is not the first time the GOP (Ryan especially) has committed this crime either. They are hardened criminals in this regard. The GOP seem to think that a musician's work belongs to them not to the person who actually did the work. OH WAIT, they are part of the 1% and that is EXACTLY what the 1% believe! They believe that YOU work for them and that the profits of YOUR labor belong to them to do with as they please. Maybe, if they don't feel like firing you for fun, they will throw you a copper or two. Well I think that the musician's Union needs to bring a class action law suit against the GOP for all of the unlicensed song use. This is what REGULATIONS are for, to keep the foot of the RICH off the neck of the rest of us. Since the criminal acts are all on tape and a pattern has emerged, I would think that it would be easy to make the case.
barneyjo | Sep 04, 2012, 04:42 PM EDT
For the benefit of our culturally uneducated cousins across the Atlantic, Philip Paris Lynott was the bass player and Front Man of the Rock Group "Thin Lizzy" This man and his band are probably the most famous music Irish export behind U2 and the Chieftans. And shame on you "Irish" stateside for not knowing that!! For any of you of "a certain age" who listened to college Radio, of course you heard Thin Lizzy, you just dont realise it. When Huey Lewis and the News were still a band in transition called "clover" they played support to Lizzy on American Tours in the 1970s. Should you wish to further educate yourselves, can I suggest you seek out tracks from the album "Live & Dangerous" on youtube or itunes. What you see or hear will go a long way to educating you about the "real Ireland" and where the country and its people have come from during your prolonged absence abroad :)!!
hollabackgurl | Sep 04, 2012, 04:29 PM EDT
So far she has been called a 'fat cow' and a 'prostitute' by the Tea Party trolls on this page. Just like Sandra Fluke and Rush Limbaugh. I have noticed that men who hate gay people also tend to hate women. If I was Phil Lynott's mother I'd be disgusted by them too.
MegK311 | Sep 04, 2012, 04:11 PM EDT
She should feel honored that anyone would want to play her son's music. I never heard of her or her son before let alone his Tin Lizzy song.
Happyhippo | Sep 04, 2012, 03:24 PM EDT
There is a statue of Phil Lynott on one of Dublin's streets, his Father was Brazilian,Metallica made a copy of whiskey in the jar disc, most preferred the Thin Lizzy version.
Murph46 | Sep 04, 2012, 03:14 PM EDT
Who freakin cares what some old,fat cow thinks?
Maggie47 | Sep 04, 2012, 03:11 PM EDT
Patrick, Are you really that desperate for news? Most of us have never heard of this "ThinLizzy" or this fella's mom. I am sorry that you lost your son.Can you let us know how he died?
myhomenj | Sep 04, 2012, 02:31 PM EDT
I never heard of thin lizzy!! and as someone else said it's just a lot of noise...Who the heck knows what they're saying or supposedly singing... silly stuff!! My vote is STILL for Mr Romney
Oysterhaven | Sep 04, 2012, 02:16 PM EDT
With Phil being an "African-Irish," she should be more concerned with the 14 % unemployment rate among black Americans, almost double the overall rate.
Happyhippo | Sep 04, 2012, 02:06 PM EDT
Jeez, the boys are back in town, i need a whiskey, now where did i put that jar.
hollabackgurl | Sep 04, 2012, 01:49 PM EDT
When people like this lady stand up for justice and equality it makes conservative trolls explode. Good on her.
greengurl | Sep 04, 2012, 01:10 PM EDT
I hope that none of you who are bashing this woman ever say anything about your own children. After all, you're a nobody. Who are you to say anything about your own child? Your opinion of someone using part of your child's life's work is not wanted and does not matter. Grow up. Shut up. You were probably a bad parent anyway.
alphonsus123 | Sep 04, 2012, 12:29 PM EDT
Firstly I would like to own up to my ignorance because all these year's I thought that the song"The boy's are back in town " referred to a certain political party. Sorry about my ignorance. still it is a great tune and one should respect a mother for her view's even if you do not agree with them, that is after all what free speech is all about!
bob40wil | Sep 04, 2012, 12:17 PM EDT
Oh yeah, that old lady's opinion will make a difference in our elections.
BrianO | Sep 04, 2012, 12:07 PM EDT
Too bad she couldn't have had a little more outrage over heroin use by the great Phil Lynott and he might be around today. Music, arts, are universal, that's why I can listen to some great music and turn it off when they think I care about their political views. Back to Ms. Lynott, I wonder if she'll be upset if Eric holder uses "Jailbreak" as his theme song, as long as they play it fast and furious or maybe played by the new black panthers.
Peggy P | Sep 04, 2012, 12:05 PM EDT
Who is Philomenia Lynott and who cares about her veiws in regards to our conventions? Gov. Romney had no hand in what music was played and I believe he wasn't even in Tampa for the convention yet. Also, after listening to the Thin Lizzy "noise" on that video I am definitely sure and hope his taste in music is better then that. On the gay issue Mitt Romney is not anti gay but does believe marriage should be between and man and a woman. They are two different things.
Fran Connor | Sep 04, 2012, 11:48 AM EDT
This is newsworthy! Release your college records, you imposter. ;-)
peggydf | Sep 04, 2012, 11:44 AM EDT
Sheesh! The woman is entitled to her opinion; and since her son was indeed an Irish legened, this deserves a spot in this paper. Rest assured, Ms. Lynott, no one identifies those two with anything your son stood for. It was probably just a desperate attempt on their part to appear "hip."
pilib04 | Sep 04, 2012, 11:28 AM EDT
Thugs like Ryan and Robme will steal whatever they wish and then call it "Business." Release your Tax Returns, YOU CROOKS!
torbreezy | Sep 04, 2012, 11:15 AM EDT
Is this worthy of the "Irish Central Blog"? Is it now?
EamonnDublin | Sep 04, 2012, 11:06 AM EDT
So sad. Still trying to live on her son's name. This lady never loses an opportunity to try to grab a headline. Why not simply take it as an honour and be a little proud that The Boys used Phil's song when they came Back in Town? I'm sure Phil (RIP) would see the funny side of it. I suppose if Obama used "There's Whiskey in The Jar" (or even home made beer!) she wouldn't see anything wrong with that. Get over it, Missus!! Éamonn, Dublin, Ireland.
beodonne | Sep 04, 2012, 10:47 AM EDT
Is 'Irish Central' blowing this out of proportion?? or is this lady for real?
Nelsonbarry | Sep 04, 2012, 09:51 AM EDT
Big deal, who cares. grow up lady.
