Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan slammed by Irish rock legend’s mother Philomena Lynott
Lynott protests against Republican use of Thin Lizzy anthem
The mother of Irish rock legend Phil Lynott has slammed American Presidential candidate Mitt Romney – and all but accused him of robbing her son’s music.
Philomena Lynott has slammed Romney and Paul Ryan’s use of the Thin Lizzy anthem ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ at his party’s convention in Tampa last weekend.
The Dublin woman is upset that her son’s music was used for political gain by the Republicans at their Florida event.
Ryan arrived onstage to the Thin Lizzy song written by Lynott’s late son.
His mother is incensed by Romney’s anti-gay marriage stance and is fuming that the music was used in Tampa.
The Irish Times reports that she told Hot Press magazine: “I am really upset at Philip’s music being used in a political way that he himself would not have approved of.
“As far as I’m concerned, Mitt Romney’s opposition to gay marriage and to civil unions for gays makes him anti-gay, which is not something that Philip would have supported.
“He had some wonderful gay friends, as indeed I do. They all deserve equal treatment in every respect, whether it be in Ireland or in the United States.
“Neither would Philip have supported his policy of taxing the poor and offering tax cuts to the rich, which Paul Ryan is advocating. There is certainly no way that I would want the Lynott name to be associated with any of these ideas.”
Lynott added: “Unfortunately there is nothing I can do about this except to express my views. A lot of fans and musicians are very angry about it, and I can understand why.”
