Artists know what their work means, so of course they object to politicians misusing it against their intentions. In the Aug 16 "Rolling Stone" Tom Morello of Rage against the Machine lit into Paul Ryan after Ryan said Rage was one of his favorite bands. Morello said Ryan's "guiding vision of shifting revenue more radically to the one percent is antithetical to the message of Rage." Any artists with any sense of cultural "message" would object as Morello did to politicians misusing their work to appeal to young voters: "I clearly see that Ryan has a whole lotta 'rage' in him: A rage against women, a rage against immigrants, a rage against workers, a rage against gays, a rage against the poor, a rage against the environment. Basically the only thing he's not raging against is the privileged elite he's groveling in front of for campaign contributions. You see, the super rich must rationalize having more than they could ever spend while millions of children in the U.S. go to bed hungry every night. So when they look themselves in the mirror, they convince themselves that 'Those people are undeserving. They're . . . lesser.'" Right on message! Ryan gave Morello a podium and a microphone.
Musical taste is a very personal thing - personally I always thought that Phil Lynott was a genius ( comparable to Shane McGowan & Van Morrison ) & that Thin Lizzy were a great band , both live & in the studio. Would Phillo have contrary social & political views to Messrs Romney & Ryan - the answer to that would have been a pretty unequivocal yes I would have thought. Mrs. Lynott was quite within her rights to suggest that Phillo would not have been happy to see his music used in the context it was.
The worst part of the Republican Convention was that horrible F*&King music. Madam you should be thankful that sombody thought to play the crap.
The arrogance of these "pop stars " ! They get publicity totally out of proportion to any contribution made to society .
Ms. Lynott, no disrespect was shown to your son's music. In my mind playing your son's music was flattering. KevinKeogh, get over yourself, sounds to me like you may want to improve on your sense of decency.
what a great looking woman, great go for it lady.
The usual teabagger anti women slu#s condemning a lady for having some integrity. Some never heard of Tin Lizzy so they vilify those who have. The gay hating/anti women lot better leave now Obama is there for 4 MORE YEARS.
Dan Breen, why are you so angry? They played a song, for God's sake. It's just a song. Ms. Lynott may . have class, but you don't. Go home and take your meds.
[1]A well known Irish lady makes a perfectly legitimate comment about her sons work being used for political reasons, despite the fact a few morons below never herd of her. She wasn't abusive in her words nor did she insult anyone, she just expressed her right to comment. I assume most of the commenters on this site are Irish or of Irish decent, well my comments wont be lady-like or gentlemanly in defending P. Lynott and in response to the foul-mouthed muck written below. What happened to you people were you forced feed garbage by ultra right-wing republican War-Mong--s.
[2]You probably believe all the bull $ your right-wing politicians tell you and there junk media write. Yet my experience in life tells me that not one of you foul-mouthed morons would say such words if you were face to face in the same room with the Irish mother who we are writing about. Because if you did and I was there I would certainly K you O [if you were male, females would be escorted out with the garbage disposal] as would most decent Irishmen. Shame on you mindless fools.
Dear corporate robot Mitt and Ayn Rand worshiping Paul hands off Thin Lizzy and their music! And any other artist for that matter, no one wants to be associated with your nonsense pro-corporation, pro-rich, pro-fundamentalist christian campaign.
what the f are they saying sounds like the RR pair. Zeros.
I'm not surprised by anything the GOP says or does to get their message across . The funny thing about the American people seems to be that if a lie is told often enough it eventually becomes the truth which the GOP understands very well. As for stealing the properties of others including the rights of an artists music there seems to be no depths they will not go.
So all of you trashing this woman do not have mothers of YOUR own? I thought you were better that that! Now let's look at some facts. This was copyright infringement and was therefore a criminal act. This is not the first time the GOP (Ryan especially) has committed this crime either. They are hardened criminals in this regard. The GOP seem to think that a musician's work belongs to them not to the person who actually did the work. OH WAIT, they are part of the 1% and that is EXACTLY what the 1% believe! They believe that YOU work for them and that the profits of YOUR labor belong to them to do with as they please. Maybe, if they don't feel like firing you for fun, they will throw you a copper or two. Well I think that the musician's Union needs to bring a class action law suit against the GOP for all of the unlicensed song use. This is what REGULATIONS are for, to keep the foot of the RICH off the neck of the rest of us. Since the criminal acts are all on tape and a pattern has emerged, I would think that it would be easy to make the case.
