Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheal Martin delivered Ireland’s annual address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York on Monday, September 27.

Each year during the annual Ministerial Week at the UN each county is invited to participate. This is the 65th year running.

During his keynote address Martin outlined Ireland’s foreign policy priorities and discussed international issues of concern for the next year.

Speaking ahead of the event, Martin said: "The United Nations offers a unique voice and an indispensable framework for the international community which we should cherish and continually work to improve, so as to realize its full potential.

"Ireland, for its part, will continue to look to the United Nations as best placed to lead the drive for more effective multilateralism as well as for guiding all our common endeavors in pursuit of a more peaceful, prosperous and secure world."

The Minister has been in New York since last week participating in various UN meetings including co-chairing a meeting with Secretary of State Hilary Clinton on global hunger.

He also participated in the Clinton Global initiative and met with various immigration groups in both New York and Philadelphia.

During his UN visits Martin also held talks with Ireland’s key trading partners and governments which share the same views on world affairs.
