Dara, it is interesting to see your data on Michigan Catholics. The other day at a meeting of about 25-30 Maryland Catholics we took a vote on who they are considering voting for. The last time we held a meeting Romney was the favorite by a heavy margin. The results of the latesting meeting showed 80% in favor of Santorum. In addition a vote on O'Mally showed a 95% disfavor. Either your information is incorrect on Catholic Michigan voters or they are not strong practicing ones.

I am a completely orthodox Catholic who being rational and scientifically informed fully appreciates the natural law sanity of the church, even when it comes to sex. She is the only institution in the west who has the cojones to actually speak the truth. Identical twin studies show homosexual attraction is definitely not a matter of just being 'born that way' and niether is it the simplistic 'chosen' view of others. The '60's degeneration is wreaking a Godawful toll on America. The Church also insists upon the preferential option for the poor for those who call themselves Catholic, hence the Democratic tradition killed by killing the young in the womb. Being a conscientious Catholic voter is not as simplistic as media presentations of the often idiotic "religion vs science" coverage reflecting undereducated news writers. I have fortunately had a liberal candidate who doesn't see carving living children out of the womb as progress, which would be like voting for slavery, only worse, so my options are simpler. What is against reason misses the goal of being fully human and fully alive as St Thomas Aquinas observed, so I hope my fellow Catholics can find their way through the complexities herein and enjoy consciences that are both informed and peaceful.

IF there is a " catholic" component to this election it is because many people feel Romney has the best chance of defeating Obama who has shown his distain and contempt of Catholics.

PS -- The more this website reports on the comings and goings of Sinead O'Connor, the more it leads me to believe the Irish have a dearth of celebrities or interesting people to talk about. But I still love the Irish and its history.

I think this is due to a couple of main reasons: 1) Catholics in America, a definite majority of them, are not very Catholic. They do not order their lives around what God wants of them. They are secular materialists, in other words, stupid. 2) It could be that politics and politicians are so untrustworthy, so dissappointing, so nothing matters who is in charge recent history, that maybe the Catholic voters do not really care that much one way or another. That second reason would define me. I look to God and I don't even bother to look at Washington any more.

It is not suprising that Michigan democratic Catholics support Romney. Romney is from Michigan. He is the "hometown" boy, so to speak.
