Michael Collins is in contention to be elected Britain’s greatest enemy.

The IRA leader is currently second only to Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in the poll at London’s National Army Museum.

The Cork rebel is currently ahead of Rommel, Napoleon and George Washington.

Only Ataturk, who repelled the Allied invasion at the Daddanelles in 1915, is ahead.

Collins, 90 years dead next year, has polled 800 votes with Ataturk 600 ahead.

The noted rebel leader introduced the ‘flying columns’ during the War of Independence and was a constant thorn in the side of the British forces in Ireland.

The Irish Times reports that the top five military leaders in the poll will be represented by five historians who will speak at an event in the National Army Museum on April 14th.

The main criterion for the poll was that each commander must have led a force against the British in battle.

Voting continues until March 30th on www.nam.ac.uk.

Erra!! fu*k it.How am I suppose to explain that the language is just called English. But is made up of many languages called English.Dano almost no word is pure English. Why don't you just explain that.So that you are giving something instead of feeding your ego.
Dano. You would never catch me out with a word that didn't come from the English language..Oh!! Wait!! The English language has no pedigree. It's a bastard language isn't it Dano?? I mean E
May I suggest seanomlb that good old british boy Dan o longshanks is both the pot and the kettle.A very black pot and kettle might I add.Beannacht de Michael Collins. Oglaich na hEireann.
Seano - The words POT and KETTLE come to mind....given your sad and embarrassing REFERENDA episode........
Sparklet the site is full of nitpickers who hang onto every last word as if their lives depended on it.
seano - 'fraid you missed the point...again. Pointless didn't claim it as an English word, but a British word!!!!
Sean, no problem. Easy done here. They should have a regular type forum where you can quote properly.
Sorry Sparklet point taken. Zealot from the Latin zelotes or the greek zeloun and found in all English dictionaries is an accepted English word warrenpoint00.
Sean, I mentioned Warrenpoint the poster, not the incident - I referred to him by name as I was replying to him. Sorry if that caused some misunderstanding.
Zealot is a Greek word, you idiot...
Zealots ,now isnt that a lovely british word, that is gonna be my new word all week, and then the brits on here talk about Anti- democracy. After their lost empire was built on stealing and theiving from other proud nations they have the gall to talk about democracy. Lordy, lordy.Beannacht de, Michael Collins you should have done a better job boy.Wiping cloth boy.
You also named Warrenpoint Sparklet which was a military operation.
Anti-democratic zealots out in force in recent posts here...self-styled 'hard men', who lack the guts to condemn PIRA atrocities...so not REAL MEN at all!!...Thank God they're part of a miserable past, and not the future...
patriot - Collins beat the brits & was killed by his fellow Irishmen - some victory.
Sean, I mentioned one atrocity, that of Omagh, because that was the catalyst for the people of NI to say enough is enough, and to opt for peace. You're being more than a bit over-picky. Omagh was a defining moment out of a huge catalogue of atrocities. Being selective would have been to randomly name several other incidents and omit those against nationalists.
