The sad thing is, I think Mountbatten was a firm believer that Ireland should not have been partitioned.
An apology in Private for a offence committed in Public is cowardly and has no value. If it was a private meeting then what was discussed should remain private too. McGuinness is displaying his natural ignorance by slyly attempting to divulge what Her Majesty may have said. As with this, and his despicable behaviour during his failed Presidential campaign in the neighbouring country to the south last year,he is a person not to be trusted. ~~~ and on that subject,Patrick, show a little backbone and professional Integrity by standing up the shameful bullying edict you staff writers are subject to there, and describe the Queen properly. When placing her in an Irish context perhaps you should try to accept she is the Queen of Northern Ireland as well as Great Britain, Australia New Zealand, Canada etc. Your readers deserve that much respect.
Very diplomatic as an Irishman can and Be. Even our children that We lost are Our unsung heros too. Still sums of route hatreds out there though that can so easily turn to upstarts Of other evils. Brilliant Of McGuinness to apply for Ambassador of Tourism !....wonder if there is any shelf-life left in His Greencard
au contraire Edmund. The sleek suits, international jet travel (1st. class) the ear of prime ministers and presidents. Being a deputy pasha in the UK and the possibility of government in a small offshore European island and best of all being able to say you're a peacemaker. You bet that's worth the lives of thousands, cheap it twice the price I'd say!
McGuinness: "...how could I say it was worth it?" I think the only thing the IRA got out of decades of bloodshed was political sinecures for the likes of McGuinness, Adams, and other capos of the Sinn Fein/PIRA organizations. Was he asking, now that he is subjected to the tedium of bureaucratic and political life, if his deputy's position was worth the lives of thousands? If so, I think not.
Sounds like a bountiful discourse, heres to Martin for bringing it to the table!
Martin McGuinness, I knew he would make us all proud in the way he handled the situation.
The murder of Lord Mountbatten was no victory for the IRA. It was a bloody disgrace. The man was a war hero.
