Sinn Fein has accused Fine Gael of desperation after a series of weekend attacks on Presidential candidate Martin McGuinness.

Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan led the criticism when he suggested that American investment in Ireland would dry up if McGuinness wins the election.

Both McGuinness and Sinn Fein deputy for Donegal Pearse Doherty have hit back at comments made by Hogan, chief whip Paul Kehoe and Fine Gael candidate Gay Mitchell over McGuinness’s IRA past.

Kehoe also invoked a furious response from the Sinn Fein camp when he tweeted: “Why would you need your salary when you have the proceeds of the Northern Bank at your disposal?” in reference to the famous bank robbery.

Derry born McGuinness has reacted angrily to the attacks. He said: “All of this is part of the black propaganda and dirty tricks which has no validity to it whatsoever.

“My record of attracting foreign direct investment to Northern Ireland at Deputy First Minister is there for all to see. Phil Hogan would want to catch himself on.

“I am also willing to allow my bank account to be open, and I’m sure Sinn Féin are willing to allow their bank accounts to be open.”

Donegal deputy Doherty also responded to the Fine Gael comments on Irish radio on Monday morning.
“It’s a sign of desperation and political naivety on behalf of the government that they think that attacking Martin McGuinness in this way will somehow boost their own support base,” claimed Doherty.

“It’s clear that they’re frustrated that only just over a quarter of their own supporters are willing to support Gay Mitchell.”

Meanwhile, almost half of voters polled by the Paddy Power bookmaker chain believe McGuinness won Friday night’s television debate with the other six candidates in the Presidential election.

The Sinn Fein candidate polled 46.2 per cent in the online poll with Sean Gallagher a distant second on 14.2 per cent.

Senator David Norris was third on 11.1 per cent with Labor’s Michael D Higgins on just 10.3 per cent. Fine Gael’s Gay Mitchell got 6.4 per cent with Mary Davis on 2.9 per cent.

Higgins is still favorite to win the race for the Aras at odds of 4/7.

Oh look, pot calls kettle black!
Money, Alcohol, or just plain Old Bad Blood ?
Barneyjo, I saw that story and quickly questioned my geographical knowledge. Yeah not the brightest of sparks these RA/SF types, campaigning somewhere where there is no votes. Of course anyone who has passed by Liberty Hall, the Mansion House or anyplace where a SF meeting is being held and observed the collection of yahoos hanging around, could see how those lads could end up canvassing in Omagh for an election in the republic of Ireland.
All - you have to laugh dont you!! Walking thru the centre of my town in county tyrone today, what do I find? Election posters for Martin McGuinness for the upcoming plebicite in which neither myself or any of my towns folk can vote in!! A very careless use of resources and a bad call for someone espousing such "Green" credentials!!:)
Ellen so you think McGuinness can't stand the heat after spending years and years dealing with negative propaganda and the Unionists. That's a pretty stupid comment isn't it?
"... election race turns dirty." Well, I certainly never expected something like that to happen! Martin, if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Will you look at that sour puss Gay Mitchell - sick and tired - gonna make a great cry baby. We need another NI lander down south to show 'em the way. Mitchell was speaking this evening on Newstalk's 'Right Hook' programme. He said there's a very light side to him that people don't see and he was sick of being asked to smile more. Light in the head, I'd say. @sirpeter fails to mention the apartheid statlet that held a people down whom his southie ilk did nothing about, but play with their cute hurlies and little balls.

@cillowen.What were you smoking when your typed that comment?Ha Ha.Carries over into sports does it?No Ulster county EVER won an All-Ireland Hurling Championship. The only Ulsterman handy with a hurl was Cúchulainn and even he is a myth.haha.As for football NI "males" won 10 All-Ireland football Championships. So let's put things in perspective about how afraid we are down south when it comes to real mans games.Out of over nearly 250 chances of NI counties winning the Championship. They won 10 times!!I can see how afraid the south are afraid of NI "males" haha.Oh! I forgot in FIFA rankings what is NI ranked now? I know the Republic is ranked 29th in the World.Oh yeah!!Northern Ireland is ranked 70th.Just in front of Albania hahahaha.Ye are not part of reality up there at all are ye?hahahaha. And by the way rioting and stone throwing is not a considered a legitimate sport. So that doesn't count.hahaha
the southies fear NI males - I've noticed it for years. They are scared of the industry exhibited by those Ulstermen. This carries over into sports as well.
CATHAL, you must be 'under orders' in this matter. Martin McGuinness is standing as an Independent Candidate. Why do all IC Posters refer to him as the Sinn Fein candidate?
great leaders can unify people, McGuiness will never be great as he won't deliver a UI.
Great leaders, get results as McMuinness has.Cowards, fools and scared whimps attack the effords of great leaders.Irelands history is over flowing with them. Buffalo, you are spot on.
Great leaders take on difficult issues; issues that have no answers because they are so difficult. The great leader acts to generate new approaches, new ideas that can lead to a resolution of the difficult situation. McGuinness strikes me as that kind of leader. Weak leaders, unwilling to take on challenging issues, afraid they may not succeed result in the whole society being limited because of this weak leadership.
McGuinness's past activities have left him open for these taunts.
