George, how many Native American languages are you fluent in? Hmm none you say. Is that because the language of the majority is English? Same here! Migrants either need Englsih or need to learn it and their kids will learn irish in school but people like you will cause even more Irish people to hate and disregard the language. Maith thu! The money comes from Europe and most of our migrants are European so they probably have contributed in their country of origin. Unless someone is committing welfare fraud then they are doing nothing wrong. Bantry, there are plenty of jobs here in hotels and restaurants and sweeping the roads etc according to George Dillon aka Wounded Knee. Why didnt you take up one of these jobs that are now being filled by migrants instead of migrating?

Their lack of interest imho is more a reflection of the denial by Official Ireland of the existance of Irish, and their despising of it. They're organising a reunion of the Irish Overseas next year in an event called The Gathering (An CRUINNÍU folks!), but Irish lang. organisations have been omitted from the setting up of this. Irish is almost invisible when you consider there is little popular culture transmitted thru' the medium of Irish.

The striking thing is that the migrants and settlers themselves show no interest in one of the official languages of the country, Irish. There have always been people with no Irish roots learning Irish, in fact when I lived in Manhattan I had many wonderful conversations in Irsh with people from places like Russia, Greece and Japan. But that's people outside Ireland. It is truly extraordinary that just about none of the migrants who have settled Ireland have any curiosity about the ancient language of the country they want to settle.

I have heard it all now. It is great what these fools of politicians have done to the country. People like me have to leave to find work and now these fools want to put in street signs for the polish and Africa. Why don't our wonderful leaders move to Poland or Africa and let someone with a brain run the country so that the sons and daughters of Ireland might have some chance of returning home one day.

I WOULD NOT REMEND ANYONE GOING TO Limerick Nasty dirty city plus crime. They the city really need to clean it up.

signposts could get very crowded in Limerick - there's a huge population of Asian's as well - there wont be any room left on the poles if he starts doing them to represent every nationality! nice idea but could cause more accidents as you try to find the right language!

Thanks WoundedKnee,I agree totally, when people realise that it was the immigrants were used to fuel the economy by being consumers ,renters and taxpayers ,mostly in an unsustanable construction industry by the greedy elite who were getting tax breaks and incentives and cheap high risk loans to build accomidation for over 500,000 immigrants(this equals 17 million to US population).A large part are now unemployed and a burden on our small economy.

How about they learn the language of their host country?
