Let's see, quite a number of Irish Americans seem to love to present themselves as a bunch of staggering and out of control drunks every March 17th. Then someone of a different cultural background attempts to make a joke based on what he sees. Poor choice on his part, but based, I'm sure, on the "bragging rights/rites that he observes in the Irish American community. Grow up and get over it,folks, you play the game, you get the name.
Maybe he was a wee bit of bollixed himself when making that remark? Personally I wouldn't be offended by a politician's remark, as that would imply to take him seriously.
Mayor Bloomberg as Mayor of NYC, represents many different ethnic groups; he should never have made such an outrageous, and ethnically insensitive and stereotypical statement. Irish-Americans have been one of our most patriotic ethnic groups. However, I'd like to respond to CitizenWhy who stated that "Mayor Daley of Chicago would never say anything like that". Mayor Daley's Father (Richard Daley), was Mayor of Chicago in 1968, during the Democratic National Convention. When Sen. Ribicoff addressed the convention and protested the brutality of the Chicago Police, Mayor Daley yelled "Sit down, you filthy Jew". The latter was witnessed by Yitzchak Rabin, who was Israel's Ambassador to the United States.
jerryoneill says Mayor Daley of Chicago would never say anything like that. True, but the Chicago St. Patrick's Day Parade has been cancelled due to all the drunken, rowdy behavior. Maybe Mayor Daley should have been saying something about the drunkenness (let's cal it that, not inebriation).
The taboos that govern social discourse and the relative rigor with which they're enforced provide a fascinating albeit disturbing glimpse i9nto the reality of power relations in this country and the Western world. Simply put, Bloomberg and his Zionist ilk have hand over Irish Americans in economic, political and cultural life. So, the PC referee normally disciplining us turns out to be a vulgar, mass murder-endorsing, ethnic cleansing-promoting, tribalist hypocrite. What can we do about it? He and his pals run the game. Get used to it.
Hey,Like I have said before, how come we never extol the virtues of the myriad of ethnic groups who have made us the great nation that we are? We seem to have this perverse proclivity to disparage other ethnic groups as a popular sport.Grow up America!
So he finally sobered up, eh?
Just because other ethnic groups jump at every opportunity to be offended doesn't mean us Irish should.
When Ronan Tynan make some comments about Jews a few years ago he was excoriated by one and all but I guess it's ok for a Jew to make such make derogatory comments about others Why the double standard?
Oh lighten up - of all people the Irish would just take the comment in stride. We have become a nation of cry babies. The ones who camplain the most just want to make the headlines for free. Good old Irish sarcasm - they just don't get it.
Are we Irish now going to join the other groups and be offended at every joke that's made!! The Irish are known for their sense of humour and have the brains to distinguish between a joke and an intentional demeaning comment. Of course we drink! We're know all over the world for drinking, and are proud of it! (I don't drink by the way). There is an Irish pub in every corner of the world. It's what makes us Irish and has served as our social and community outlet since time in memorial. Trust me, John Dunleavy will be having a fair few drinks that day. Our image for drinking has served us very well throughout the world and we are very well respected wherever we go, so it has done us no harm up to now. I'm not a supporter of Mayor Bloomberg and find his reference a little weird also but he attends many Irish events and tries to empathize with the crowd. The American Ireland Historical Society is very selective in who they invite to their events, so a reaction like this doesn't surprise me. Who owns this building by the way? Does it belong to the Irish people? Now back to my singing "when Irish eyes are smiling......
not surprised at all I have watched him sleep through mass for years.
It's nice that the mayor apologized, but it was not necessary. He had a moment of truth overcame him. He remembered seeing a bunch of drunk/inebriated people hanging out windows and didn't think it was a pretty sight. No matter what the occasion such a sight is not pretty. As a person of Irish background, I have never enjoyed seeing drunken Irishmen hanging out windows and lose total control of their bodily functions. Put the blame where it belongs, enjoy St. Pat's Day and let those Irishmen that hang out windows know that they are really an embarrassment to the entire Irish community and others do notice.
I've been marching in the St. Patrick's Day parade with my Alma Mater for over 30 years and never once experienced anyone "hanging out windows, inebriated". If the mayor is referring to the gathering at the American Irish Historical Society his remarks could not be further from the truth. Again a double standard applies to the Irish and particularly Irish Catholics. We take it on the chin and laugh it off. Can you imagine if the mayor made a remark like this about Black Americans or his own race?
Mayor Daley would never have said anything like that.
