As an American who has written a historical fiction tale which involves McGuinness, and the responses listed below,
I can understand that there may never be peace in Ireland without people really changing.Sad.

Change the election process so that the common man walking his dog on the Commons road can enter the race. Getting the backing of four councils or twenty TD's smacks of elitism and nepotism. Gaining the Presidency in Ireland is akin to how it works or worked in the English Navy. In that its a case of who you are and who you know.

Yet another tabloid style gutter article from Cathal Dervan. Instead of pointing out to readers how much Martin McGuinness has done to promote peace in Ireland why do you find the need to reach back into the past and produce a slanderous attack in an attempt to damage McGuinness's chances of becoming Uachtarán na hÉireann? How many of the other candidates running to become Uachtarán na hÉireann or for that matter how many politicians in Ireland today would like Martin McGuinness be willing to sacrifice their lives for the love of Ireland and the Irish people?

I dont understand why any group of people can feel it is okay to kill someone for any reason
what happend for the want of peace
You cannot be mad if your people were killed but at the same time feel it is okay for you to kill them. It only make you as bad as them.We need to live together. Put the past behind and start living in the present and future. We are not living in Afgan with the telaband

Perhaps The Republic is not mature enough to accept the giant step forward to elect McGuinness, but it would surely show courage for the Country to embrace a message of Peace for the future.

I'm sure that we'll be seeing this man selectively condemning quite a few of his former comrades in arms in the coming months in his quest for the Presidency. He has a very odd view of loyalty. Just follows the money & does whatever it takes to get his 30 pieces of silver from the Brits. Wow, what a great leader for Ireland. Just what Ireland needs now - another money sucking Bureaucrat.

Thank god, Ben O'Sullivan was not shot dead as your report states. Martin McGuinness as president ? Can you imagine if he was to become president ? The poor detectives assigned to his protective detail would be former colleagues of Gerry McCabe. Why can't these SF/RA vermin (Adams/Mcguinness) stay up North.
The Republic of Ireland's economy is in tatters and businesses need anything they can get. I don't know how many people attended the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis (?) held last week in BELFAST, but every one of them needed a hotel room, a newspaper maybe and each of them needed to be fed yet Sinn Fein decided to spend their money in Belfast rather than in a town or city where their TD's represent constituents.
