Irish presidential candidate Martin McGuinness denied this week that he was a senior member of the IRA at the time of the 1987 Enniskillen bomb that killed eleven people.

The victims were killed when a bomb exploded during a Remembrance Sunday commemoration at the town's cenotaph, an event that McGuinness said he was 'ashamed' had happened.

'It was absolutely terrible and atrocious, McGuinness told Ireland national broadcast station RTE this week. 'No, I was not a senior member of the IRA then.'

McGuinness has previously admitted he was an IRA commander in Derry, but has for years insisted he left it in 1974.

During a televised debate this week in which he participated with the other six candidates, McGuiness said he realized the majority of Irish journalists did not believe him: 'I also know journalists if they had their opportunity, they would try to blame me for the 1916 rising and the War of Independence.'

Reaction from senior unionist politicians was swift. UUP leader Tom Elliott told UTV News that McGuinness's comments made it 'perfectly clear to people in Northern Ireland that Sinn Féin will say or do anything as circumstances dictate.'

'Martin McGuinness is asking the voters of the Republic of Ireland to believe that he felt ashamed when incidents like the Enniskillen bomb took place,' Elliott said. 'Maybe so, but is he ashamed enough to hand over the people responsible? Or is he trying to use the Enniskillen dead in a disgusting and shameful bid to further his electoral prospects in the Republic?'

Also responding to his statement Democratic Unionist Party MLA for the Enniskillen area Arlene Foster challenged McGuinness to talk to the Historical Enquiries Team (HET) about the 1987 bomb in Enniskillen, for which no warning had been given.

'If Martin McGuinness really believes the murders that day were shameful, then he should have no problem speaking to the HET and answering any questions they have,' she said.

'The speculation for decades has been that the Enniskillen bomb was the work of provisional IRA from Londonderry where Martin McGuinness was the second in command of the PIRA.

'Rather than proposing an international truth commission to deal with these matters, it would be much more helpful to the healing process if McGuinness was to tell the truth about this incident to the HET.'

Fuiseog – I always find it a bit rich when US-based posters, especially ex-military, glibly dismiss the rights of unionists to have a say in how they are governed…the very rights that the anti-democratic republican zealots claim they were seeking, as they bombed the heart out of so many NI towns and villages. No, there is not ‘only one’ trouble in Ireland, as the continued dissident recipe of death demonstrates… The seminal event in US History was your civil war, oh what was that about again?
I agree with sirpeter; there always has been only one trouble in Ireland, English colonial occupation. Occupation is constant terrorism. The UN and the big powers left us at the mercy af the colonial apparatus. They showed us no mercy. The IRA arose to defend human rights and national aspirations. They were brutally opposed by one of the best equipped armies on earth. In the depravity which ensued, many atrocities happened--thats the way with the psychotic phenomenon of war. I believe that the aggressor bears the brunt of the blame in these times of madness and mayhem. The HET is a component of the occopation regime--therefore can't be fair--The Irish nation must find the courage to stand together and finally help the world to rid itself of the maladies of war domination, for ever. (I'm an ex-soldier, USA)
Why is McGuinness only ashamed of the atrocity at Enniskillen? Where's the shame over the deaths of so many other innocent people at the hands of his comrades in RA/Sinn Fein? Was gerry McCabes killing striking a blow for Irish freedom or was he simply a casualty of the tawdry act of a bunch of thugs knocking over an armoured truck ? Does Martin recall that in the seventies his pals threatened to kill members of the Irish cabinet and the president of Ireland ? The Irish electorate should be very cautious as RA/Sinn Fein are gradually infiltrating Irish political institutions such as the Dail and now potentially the presidency.
If there was no injustice in NI and if the people were allowed to march peacefully in protest of that injustice without been murdered by the British army there would be no IRA and no need to feel sorry about anything.Lets just remember that!!
You gotta wonder if McGuinness really means what he says or is he just saying what he needs to say in order to get the job? He had always refused to condemn the IRA murder of Garda officer McCabe during a post office robbery until miraculously last week he chose to finally condemn the murder after scrutiny from the media... even though he lobbied for the release of the IRA murderers!!
It's interesting to note that Ireland has the same caliber of moron running for President as the U.S. does. It must be some astrological phenomenon. I believe there are extraordinary people out there who will not tolerate the media character assassination so they don't run. Ultimately, it will be the media which collapses.
