Mark O'Mara to seek 'stand your ground' hearing during George Zimmerman trial

There never would have been an issue if Zimmerman hadn't disobeyed the police by following Martin, threatening Martin and creating a miserable situation. Zimmerman created the entire situation, so how can he then say he had to protect himself from the situation he created? He was never threatened while he was in his car. His own arrogance and stupidity caused the death of a young man. George Zimmerman should be kept apart from the rest of society, keeping us safe from his racist attitude and ignorance.

But how do you use this defense when you 'leave your ground'? Told to stay in place, Zimmerman disregarded the old maxim of 'leave well-enough alone', and marched into danger resulting in a killing.

Florida's Stand Your Ground law is based on the common law right to self-defense, which has been repeatedly recognized by the US Supreme Court and state supreme courts. The procedure used under the Florida Stand Your Ground statute is not unusual in that, under American criminal law, when a defense is established, judges are required to either dismiss the case or to void a jury verdict of guilt. Notably, of the less than one hundred reported applications of the Florida law, a disproportionately large number have been by Blacks who defended themselves against attacks by criminals. And the law seems to have contributed to a substantial reduction in Florida's rate of violent crime. Contrary to the impression offered by news media coverage, the Stand Your Ground Law remains popular with the public and is extremely unlikely to be revised to a significant degree.

The Florida stand-your-ground law means that a person who is threatened or under attack doesn't have to retreat from his attacker, but is allowed to stand and defend himself.
