Major march and rally planned for Belfast city during Obama’s visit for G8 Summit
First Lady Michelle Obama is reportedly making her own plans to visit the Republic
A huge public march, time to coincide with the G8 Summit of world leaders, will be held in Belfast the weekend before the President Obama arrives.
According to the Irish Independent, President Obama, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and British Prime Minister David Cameron will be among the leaders attending the June summit in County Fermanagh.
Meanwhile a coalition of trade unionists and campaign groups like Amnesty International and Friends of the Earth are organizing the Fairer World Festival to coincide with the meeting.
'Civil society organisations have come together to offer people an opportunity to challenge the policies and priorities of the G8 leaders who meet in Northern Ireland in June 2013,' the organizers wrote.
'Our organisations represent many different interests but we are united in a commitment to the creation of a world that is fair and just for all.
'We believe that achieving social, economic and environmental justice must be central to political decision-making. We will co-ordinate a festival of events to coincide with the G8 summit, including a major public demonstration in Belfast calling for a fairer world.'
The public march will be held in Belfast on Saturday June 15.
President Obama is scheduled to visit Belfast before the G8 leaders gather at the five star luxury Lough Erne golf resort.
The president is expected to meet with political and community leaders during his whistle-stop tour of the city, his first ever visit to Northern Ireland.
In 2010 Obama led a state visit to Dublin and the tiny village of Moneygall in County Offaly, the birthplace of his great-great-great-grandfather.
According to the Independent, there is speculation that his wife and children might return to Moneygall next month.
An additional 3,600 police officers will be drafted in from forces across the UK to help the Police Service of Northern Ireland provide security for the two-day G8 event.
According to the White House the details of Michelle Obama's travel to the Republic will be announced at a later date.
