Police in Mauritius have made a major breakthrough in their bid to find the killers of Irish bride Michael McAreavey, murdered on her honeymoon in 2011.

French DNA experts have uncovered DNA evidence from at least two of her murderers on her clothes.

The Irish Independent reports that the DNA from the suspected killers has been found on the clothes she wore when she was murdered.

The paper says the Central Criminal Investigation Department in Mauritius has made a major breakthrough.

Forensic examination of her clothes has now identified DNA from at least two of her suspected killers.

Police on the paradise island believe three people were involved  in the murder of Michaela, daughter of the Tyrone GAA team boss Mickey Harte.

She was murdered at the former Legends Hotel while on her honeymoon with husband, John McAreavey, in January 2011.

A case file has been handed over to the office of the Directors of Public Prosecutions on the island by a new investigation team, set up in 2012.

Professor Christian Doutremepuich, a forensic expert from Bordeaux in France, was enlisted last month to assist Mauritian police in their probe.

Several items from the scene were sent to the professor for further DNA examination including clothing worn by McAreavey on the day she died and the key-card which was used by the murderers to access her room.

Over 300 DNA samples from hotel employees have been sent for analysis since 2012.

A source close to the investigation told the Irish Independent that the French DNA expert had discovered new evidence which could be crucial in a future trial.

Hotel workers Avinash Treebhoowon and Sandip Moonea were cleared of the murder in 2012 after a jury in the Supreme Court of Mauritius unanimously found them not guilty.

Michaela’s family are aware of the latest developments.

A statement from both families said: “The McAreavey and Harte families have been recently informed about new developments in the investigation into Michaela’s murder.

“They will await further information on those developments before making any additional comment.”
