The First State Bank in Gallatin, Tennessee, which was robbed by a man dressed in a leprechaun suit

An unlucky "leprechaun" allegedly tried to rob a Nashville bank while brandishing a weapon on St. Patrick's Day — but lost his life as well as his pot of gold.

After successfully absconding with an undisclosed amount of cash from the First State Bank in Tennessee, police finally caught up with the man and his getaway driver.

A high-speed car chase ensued and, according to police, the men opened fire, with at least one bullet hitting a police car.

Coming to an abrupt halt, the men ditched the car and tried to make their escape through a field. But both were killed by cops.

The money was recovered from the getaway car

A witness to the crime said she saw a man dressed as in a green top hat, shorts, a vest and a fake beard run away from the bank with a blue bag in his hands.

"He started to come in, then looked at his watch, then turned around and left," she said. He walked toward the other bank, and then a couple of minutes later he ran out of the bank with a blue bag in his hands, said the woman.

The men have not yet been identified. An investigation into the shooting is underway.
