Limerick City is among six other cities competing to host the Gay Olympics 2018.
The south western city is in competition against Amsterdam, London, Paris, Orlando, Rio de Janeiro, and Sao Paolo.
Cillian Flynn of Limerick Pride, told the Irish Sun, “When people look at the list they say we don’t have a chance but when you look at the facilities and what we have on offer... Yes we can do it.
“Right now we have two members of our bid committee in Bulgaria at the Federation and Gay Games Conference where they are officially unveiling what’s happening for the bid process.”
If successful, the bid would bring millions of euros in revenue into the area. Shannon Development, the region’s Conference and Sports Bureau and local authorities are supporting the bid.
Karen Brosnahan, business manager with the Shannon Region Conference and Sports Bureau said, “Nationally we have been trying to lobby to get some funding through Failte Ireland to support the bid process to allow Limerick put its best foot forward and hopefully be one of three short-listed cities that would get a site visit and hopefully be the overall winner.
“The outcome being that Limerick in 2018 would actually get to host the tenth world Gay Games which would be phenomenal for Limerick.”
The Federation of Gay Games released a statement in July which stated, “We wish the bidding groups courage as they take the next steps in this process. Only three of these groups will make it to the site selection meeting in late 2013 in Cleveland, the host of the next edition of the Gay Games in 2014…We are confident that we will have the satisfying and challenging task of choosing among a number of highly qualified bidders.”
The next Gay Games will be held in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2014.

Mairint -- Why would my soul be at risk because someone else runs a race?

Interesting to see how censorship works at IC. Notice the comments in favour - money, parties, anti-Catholic remarks. Ah sure why not- distribute rainbow condoms all over the city and have the biggest orgy next to Babylon. Great fun! Never mind your souls.

I hope Limerick hosts them. My city hosted the Gay Softball World Series a few years ago & let me tell you, those guys know how to spend money! It was a huge success!

Why shouldn't Limerick host them? They'll make more money than that poorly attend Catholic Eucharistic Congress and people will actually pay. I am certain they will throw more enjoyable after parties too.

Peterson -- What information do you have about about my lifestyle? We'll get to the rest of your comment after you answer that question.

Limerick city has a horrible reputation, especially for narrow-minded Catholic bigotry (e,g. Ireland's only anti-Semitic Pogrom). This event could improve its international image and add considerably to its municipal coffers.

Greg --- What does God say in the Bible about your "lifestyle" ??

Piper Mac -- That's right. We've moved completely away from out Christian roots. But of course, if you had any Irish roots yourself, you'd know that we were here long before Christians were ever heard of.

gays should able to compete in the REGULAR olympics...that's the reason their fighting for EQUAL RIGHTS....they want to be treated like EVERYONE ELSE....i think this is SILLY...this is different then the special olympics that Eunice Kennedy started years ago. alisa

Can you imagine what the cost of hosting this would be?? The country would be better served getting out of the debt they are in rather than digging the hole deeper!! Olympics are for athletes irrespective of there sexual orientation and if there standard is good enough for THE Olympics then who is the Nitwit that raised this rediculous idea? CitizenWhy has a point :)

Once I was funny ,now Im just gay ! I would take serious issue with Shannon Development if they use taxpayers money to support such a charade .

Nicopernicus! Please! Do not tie this (that?) economic opportunity for Limerick to the glen of the facetious. These participants or attendees may purchase Erin's "ghost estates," and wouldn't that be special?
MegK311 | Aug 23, 2012, 12:39 PM EDT
Will the " Olympic Committee" approve the use of the word Olympic? I think the only other group allowed to use the word Olympic is the "Special Olympics" Anyone know the answer?

Smart move, Limerick. A part of the promo perhaps the city should sponsor a Gay Limerick Limerick writing contest. Some of the results would probably be hilarious.

Why is it, when homosexuals tell us all (constantly, yawn yawn) that all they want is to be "normalised" that they then want to host their own "gay" games, "gay" this, "gay" that. It really is getting to the yawn, yawn, YAWN stage. Give it a rest. As for Limerick City - gerragrip.
Seanmor | Aug 23, 2012, 09:14 AM EDT
Cillian Flynn's suggestion reminds me of an event that happened in Limerick around May of '67: two homosexual men declared that they were married to each other. It would be sadly ironic if the city on the Shannon were chosen for the gay olympics of 2018. Insted of promoting homosexual athletes, Limerick should be gloryfying Hugh Dubh O'Neill and his small army of Ulstermen who held that city for 4 months against Crowmwell's army in 1651, also Sarsfield's heroic defence of the city against the Williamites in 1691.
