To some people it just doesn't feel good to talk about past abuse. If they have found a way to move past it wihtout having to turn to drugs, etc., it may be too painful to revisit the horror. Besides, one person changing his story, doesn't suggest to anyone that knows anything about the history of child abuse in institutions around the world that the other abuse survivors should be doubted. Afterall, how many priests have already been convicted in a court of law?

I saw Cllr Michael O’Brien in a distraught state on that Prime Time TV show. There was no doubting the sincerity of the hurt that he displayed for all of Ireland to see on the live broadcast show. barneyjo is probably right – how many more like him is out there? ritmomente is also right – house cleaning (and refurbishment) must continue. I think Ms. Buckley may regret her haste in this story.

Still need to clean house with the bishops that directly prolonged these abusers' reign of terror.

...And if someone has leaked this deliberately as part of a smear campaign to discredit the claims of abuse victims, then forget it; it wont work. Michael O'Brien is only one man. What about the rest.

I believe that the man has suffered in his life; first as an abuse victim, then as a survivor of abuse. 1999 was a long time ago. And if, between then and now his journey of survival allowed him to acknowledge the damage in his own past, then I for one can only be glad for him. If Christine Buckley or whoever can point to something specific that would indicate that he is lying, then let them make it known. If not, then let the man be to deal with the hurt in his life.

I believe O'Brien. Many people deny sexual abuse because of the stigma attached. He says he wants nothing, so he has no reason to admit, at this time, that the abuse occurred.
