Maureen: As to why they did not see the iceberg coming - it was because it was what is called a "blue berg". Remembering that approximately 9/10 of the entire berg is BELOW the water line and thus invisible, a blue berg does not have that snowy white cap above water that we all think of. Instead it is more like a bluish glass that can't be seen until you are right up on it. Really the only way to distinguish it at night is to observe a difference in the stars (or lack of them) that the berg is in front of on the horizon. butlerreport: As for the number who died, it should be remembered that the ship carried MORE life boats than required by law. Regulations of the time based the numbers of life boats by the projected tonnage of the vessel, not people. The designer of the ship, Thomas Andrews had wanted even more than was the final number. You can THANK the Titanic, it's loss and all the people who died for the laws we have today that make sure that there are more than enough life boats on a ship. If anyone should hang their heads in shame, it would be Bruce Ismay and Captain Lord of the Californian.
Nice, see Titanic Boston in memory of John Harper.(you tube)

I think it was the hitting of the iceberg that sank the boat and not because the boat was made badly... unless in those days (or even these days) you can build an iceberg proof boat. On the other hand.. How come they didn't see the massive Iceberg in front of them anyway?
Celebrate a badly made ship? Celebrate the death of 1500 who couldn't get off? They should hang their heads in shame.
