From their beginnings, BrianO, the unions educated their members and were, in fact, one of the most important of educational institutions. Union teachers taught many an immigrant worker and their family how to read and write English. Writers like Anzia Yezierska got their start by publishing stories of immigrant life in union newspapers. Unions provided scholarships for the children of workers-- socio-economic mobility within one generation-- when has that ever happened without collective action? Unions educated the public about the rights of workers and provided an essential counterbalance to the over-reaching of plutocrats, from the Robber Barons of the 19th century to the Mitt Romney vulture capitalists of today. The unions built the middle class that is now endangered in our culture of greed and me-first radical individualism. I have never met a "mindless" union member, but I've worked with many fearless, dedicated and knowledgeable union reps and members (I've been a local union pres, vp, and award-winning newsletter editor). On the other hand, there are plenty of knee-jerk union haters-- none of them able to give a fact-based reason for opposing unions. Testimony to the good work done by unions has consistently come-- until recently-- from the Catholic Church, as noted by Mark Oppenheimer: "'Union busting is a mortal sin,' the Catholic Scholars for Worker Justice said in a 2010 statement on the indispensable role of unions. And while the church hierarchy has never quite put it that way, workers’ right to unionize is an issue on which church teachings are pretty clear.... " (6/22/12 NY Times, "For Duquesne Professors, a Union Fight That Transcends Religion"). Educate yourself (or join a union and learn)!
Only Kennedyphobes thought there was any chance at all that this election wouldn't be a landslide! 60%, not bad at all. Good luck Joe.
Eiriamach, vote him out? John Tierney ran a money laundering scam through his bank accounts that landed everyone in his family in jail and he got re elected. The union members vote as they are told, mindlessly. But that is what your side likes mindless drones, good luck getting them to work harder and take up the slack as the dreaded private sector achievers hunker down and try to endure the coming world wide recession. As to Kennedy, he has nice red hair and will vote lock step with obama ,what more could you ask for, he is perfect for Massachusetts.
Sure its sweet...and in a few years he'll be given Uncle Ted's old seat, and who knows he may be a good Senator?
SUPER....AND TO HELL WITH THE KENNEDY HATERS.....THE KENNEDYS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN FOR THE LITTLE PERSON.....remember the PEACE CORPS. ?....that was JFK. alisa
I sure hope he is like his dad and not like the uncle Ted.
Some families pass down a craft or trade from generation to generation. Others pass down a love of music. The Kennedys pass down a tradition of public service. With some help from Barney Frank and other friends, Joe might learn to do good work in office. If he doesn't, the good people of Massachusetts will vote him out because the name alone is not enough.
...and the Kennedy legacy continues...God help us all. Why they have not been relegated to the trash pile is beyond me, for it is clear that is where they belong.
Massachusets is lost, the union pensions are unfunded but are promised to grow by 8%, The election of money launderer john tierney, and fake Indian Elizabeth Warren show the unions power. All is lost.
NO!! They're a shameful bunch!
"Let's go Joe"! If I lived in Massachusetts, I would have voted for him. :-)The man deserves a chance. Don't condemn him because he has a name you've deciced is bad. I think JFK & RFK would have been very proud of Joe Kennedy III!
Another unqualified Kennedy who was elected because of his name. I supported JFK and RFK. Edward was a profligate who sold out the Catholic Church and was still lauded at his funeral by Sean Cardinal O'Malley.
