According to a new poll John F. Kennedy is still the favorite president of the last 50 years, while Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton are ranked second and third.

In a survey, performed by Gallup, 85 percent of those asked felt that Kennedy has performed well in office. This is about the same figures that Gallup discovered in 2006. Since 1990 Kennedy has consistently come in first place when it comes to the question of how he performed in office.

Ronald Reagan was ranked second with 74 percent approving of his performance. The tough times he weathered in both his terms paid off. Although his job approval rating dropped to about 40 percent during the 1982 recession and also during the Iran-Contra scandal these periods didn’t seem to stain public memory.

Bill Clinton’s rating rose this year, while Jimmy Carter’s dropped. Back in 2006 Carter and Clinton both got a 61 percent rating in the Gallup poll. They were tied in third place. This year Clinton has stayed in third place with a rating of 69 percent while Carter has dropped to sixth place with just 52 percent.

Despite the cloud over Clinton’s presidency in 1998 with the Monica Lewinsky affair, Clinton still got a rating of 66 percent in 2001. This is due to the booming economy at the time. Although the majority approved of his performance as president many did not see him a “honest and trustworthy”. In this question he got only 24 percent in 1999.

In 2008 his ranking sunk to its lowest point as he aggressively supported his wife Hillary Clinton’s run for the Democratic nomination against Barack Obama.  When it appeared that things were going Obama’s way he reacted with anger and was accused of engaging in racial politics.

However, in recent years his stock has soared in popularity, this was evident in the value the Democrat put on him on the campaign trail for the midterm elections. Even some Republican’s were growing a soft spot for him. A New York Times piece said “Many Republicans with a deep animus for President Obama find their hearts aflutter with the memory of a former leader. He was a compassionate conservative, a guy who cared about free trade, a man who reached across the aisle."

George W. Bush had a surprising burst of popularity. His rating went from 54 percent in 2006 to 64 percent this year. Also Lyndon Johnson’s ratings jumped from 41 percent to 49 percent.

Ted Sorensen far better than I just did, wrote of Kennedy's greatest accomplishments: 1. Man left the earth, braved the sea of space and voyaged to the moon, exploring a new world. In the process, the U.S. demonstrated to the world that free people can establish technological and peaceful pre-eminence in space. 2. Established in law that all Americans are equal, enforcing the integration of universities in Mississippi and Alabama. Federalized states’ national guards and sent in the Army to preserve law and order on the campus. 3. Kept the peace when almost every counselor in his cabinet and every member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff urged the President to launch an attack on Cuba, a move that would have immediately led to a nuclear exchange with the Soviet Union.
I'm tired of hearing about how JFK was all style and no substance. It was JFK who saved the world from nuclear war during the Cuban missal crisis. JFK created the Peace Corps, started us on our way to the moon, and introduced Civil Rights legislation. He also challenged us to do our best, to give back to the country which gave us so much. Did he make mistakes, you bet - the Bay of Pigs, his womanizing .... I think his accomplishments correctly place him among our best presidents
SouthBendNative - maybe he was ahck who failed at everything he set out to achieve, he ruined the American Economy, government bureaucracy grew more under him than under any president in history, his idiotic military spending increased national indebtedness. Reagan was a failure at everything he touched, the cold war ended because of russian corruption and the idiocy of the communist party there, it had nothing to do with Reagans administration. He was an abject leader and an entirely s**t president. He also supported many dictatorships such as General Pinochet a convicted war criminal and supported the oppressive reign of Margaret Thatcher who persecuted IRISH people in Northern Ireland denying them the right to due process and human rights. Give me one good reason why he should be remembered fondly.
Kennedy and Reagan had leadership qualities and were respected around the world for that, we have not seen that ability in any president since and we certainly dont have it now. We can only hope for such a person in the future.
How anyone can call Reagan overrated is beyond me, that is unless you enjoyed the cold war. Bill Clinton may have popularity but he had no core principles and no guts as far as facing our enemies. I am no Obama fan by any means, but at least he holds some core beliefs, regardless of how misguided they are.
"When it appeared that things were going Obama’s way bill clinton reacted with anger and was accused of engaging in racial politics"....That was when the obama camp threw the race card at clinton, only then did bill became angry. After all bill clinton was the first black president.
George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton were among the best at managing government. Both are under-rated. JFK and Reagan are over-rated.
JFK challanges and inspires you on a very fundamental everyday level to think and feel strongly about how you are going to use your life. His life conveys the power of the word and art of intention that burns on long after you're gone. The USA can and will put a man on the moon by the end of 1969.
