Murph46, think Scrivner was referring to Bushmills and not the college, Bucknell! And making Christmas fruitcake, blonde version, with Jameson is a nice way to combine the sugars!

This article isn't showing the true picture at all. It's a known fact pubs are mostly empty during the weekdays in Ireland. They make their money at the weekends. You pay for the use of the premises. What publican wants a customer sipping two bottles of water all night taking up space if the price was €1 a bottle. They would harness you out of a restaurant if you sat eating two sandwiches all night. They have to make a living.Spending €8 to sit in a premises all night if you don't drink beer is hardly a rip off.

It's the same everywhere. I'm living in Argentina at the moment, and I am training for a marathon, so off the booze. I was out with friends last weekend, a Pint of Quilmes (The local most popular beer) was 10 pesos (around $2:40), whilst a 500ml bottle of Water was the same price. After a few bottles of water, I decided to go mad and ordered a Sprite Lite (poured from a 2l bottle into a 500ml glass - with ice, so less than 500ml Sprite in the glass) - Cost 15 pesos..... Where is the incentive anywhere to cut down of drinking... the same 2l bottle of Sprite in the Supermarket retails for around 8 pesos... Such is life everywhere, not just back home.

Not hard to figure this one out. When in Ireland in May, my husband - a Coke drinker - ordered a second Coke at 2.70 E and then figured out he coud order a pint of Guinness for much less. So it was Guinness from then on and saved his Coke orders for the USA. It is one of the best stories we tell of our time in Ireland. Gets lots of laughs
