Members of an Israeli death squad who killed a leading Hamas figure used Irish passports to enter Dubai in the United Arab Emirates where the killing occurred, authorities there say.

Seven people, including one woman, were said to have taken part in the death squad which killed Mahmoud al-Mabhouh (50), said to be a top arms procurer for Hamas and wanted by Israel for the killing of two Israeli soldiers in 1989. Four of the seven had Irish passports, say police.

Medical experts say al-Mabhouh died from asphyxiation from a pillow found near his body and stained with blood. A maid found his body the next day.

An Irish Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said: "We are aware of the media reports and we are in contact with authorities locally to try and determine the truth of the reports."

If it is true the implications for relations between Israel and Ireland are significant. It would place Irish passport holders who travel to Arab countries in some jeopardy. Israeli/Ireland relations are difficult at present, as Israel views Ireland as very pro-Palestinian

Israel has denied the killing, with Israeli media claiming al-Mabhouh had many Arab enemies who could have killed him.

Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel.

al-Mabhouh's brother stated it was not the first attempt to kill him. Six months ago, he was in a coma and treated in Dubai for poisoning.

Using Irish passports is nothing new in the Middle East. In 1986 US officials, including Oliver North, used Irish passports when traveling in the region offering arms for hostages in what became known as the Iran/Contra affair, which deeply damaged Ronald Reagan's presidency.

Terrorists, by definition, are those whose policy is to purposely target non-combatants for the purpose of sowing disorder and chaos. This hit, by definition, was a classic counter-terrorist operation and not terrorism by any stretch of the imagination. Nor was George Washington a terrorist. Now about those IRAs and Provos in Belfast, are we calling them "politicians" now?
you are a callous individual IrishAndProud they should not be using our good name to murder individuals in other countries no matter your views on their political affiliations. It is interesting that you would like to contribute to the destabilisation of the middle east with the destruction of a traditional power in the region and in general one of the more progressive countries in the middle east. Remember the democratic and sympathetic to the west mossadegh government was overthrown with the Aid of some western powers with the resulting extreme government. nonetheless it would be very dangerous for peace in the region for Iran to be involved in a conflict or destroyed. Let reason reign, not overly emotional responses and the support of murder of any life.
If Israel indeed did this, then good for them. I consider it a high honor to have had Irish passports used in the process of liquidating an Arab terrorist. Israel, in my opinion, has been far too nice and far too passive with these people for far too long -- it's about time they started going after them more aggressively. I would love to see the entire Iranian regime go down this way, along with its nukes. Maybe Israel can somehow use Iran's own nukes, on the Iranian regime, themselves.
Irish above all should know Israel has a historic right to exist. They've had a continuous presence in the Land before and after Islam arrived--sometimes minority, sometimes majority. They are outnumbered 500 to one by Muslim neighbours. They have their historic land that is one-third the size of Ireland. Their land is approx. 1.7% the size of contiguous neighbouring countries. Yes, some Arabs chose to leave new State of Israel and others fled; a larger number of Jews were evicted from Muslim countries, penniless. Muslim law simply cannot allow loss of territory from House of Islam to return to House of War (non-Islam). Muslims have won a handful of Nobel prizes; Jews have won over 15 dozens. We owe lots more to Israelis--including God's Word, His Law (basis for our laws and freedoms) and our Lord and Saviour. Let's look out for hype from Muslim and/or self-flagellating liberal Jewish commentators.
God Bless George Washington! He hated the british !! As well as Andrew Jackson !! The Americans under Ronald Reagan had his clowns Casey & gang used Irish passports to go to Iran while americans were being held hostage (1980)in Iran. Deal was hold on to the hostages untill he became president and guns and money will be sent so they (IRAN) CAN KEEP FIGHTING IRAQ... Oh how soon we forget.............FINKELSTEIN IS RIGHT ABOUT ISRAEL
George Washington was a terrorist once.
Israel has never apologized for using violence against its enemies. Last year in Gaza they used bombs to kill over one thousand civilians in a few short weeks, including many women and children. But that isn't considered terrorism ofcourse---atleast not according to the US newsmedia. Terrorism is when Irish or Arab people use violence against THEIR enemies.
To simple-minded people everything is a simple case.
Its got absolutely nothing to do with "Who is the commando and Who is the terrorist".Its a simple case of Who are the Irish and Who are the murderers with the counterfeit Irish Passports. You really have to stop using neuron laxatives Rebelforce and accept thought constipation as a natural occurrence in your genetic construction.
It's the same old story. Who's considered a "terrorist" and who a "commando" depends on whose ox is being gored.
