Nah Irishjule I still think irish men are the best, sure I married one. He is over 80 now but still as romantic as the first day I met him. He never missed a hurling match in his own county and later became a M.U.fan, even now he props himself up to watch a good game. Do I begrudge him that...never. Do not mind Georgie, he gets up everyone nose.

Dillon is an Irish name, so George, why are you trashing the Irish? I'm proud to be an Irish American. About the article...most of the Irish men I know are not as romantic as Italians, for example.

Because they (we) talk about things they don't have to prove they don't do very well!!!

sirpeter has a good point. Talking about women can lead to dangerous water, including having to listen to an otherwise good guy get maudlin.

What about hurlers? Do they talk about sex, or just do it?

What's the problem? Aren't there commercials in Ireland?

raynandsnow: I think that maybe art is competitive...of course you should "be true to yourself" whatever that really means, but do a little exercise in your mind: take one of your artistic creations and display it across the room from someone elses. Then have a 3rd party ask everyone coming through which is "better", meaning what to they like better. If your art doesn't get high marks, how do you feel about it? Be honest with yourself. If your reaction is "that's OK, I lke mine just fine" then perhaps you really are non-competitive, but virtually any feeling of rejection or rage against those stupid folks who like the other better, says you are competitive. By the way, you can do a lot of good art for sale and still remain "true to yourself", while affording housing and food and clothing.

Much safer subject to discuss among buddies, but that has nothing to do with what they may like to do given a choice.
The question to ask is: if you have a choice between playing football and having sex, what would you choose? If they say football, then Ireland is in real trouble, way beyond the economy.

Well I'm not one of those men ! I am an artist, and all artists tend to deal with, is women in their work ! Only jokeing, but in general artists tend to have no interest in sport, let alone soccer ! I think its because art was never meant to be competitive (even though sadly, it often is, in the world of making a living). I say always be true to yourself

Quite right Sirpeter, irish men do not talk about women when out with their friends, but when we women get into a huddle we never stop talking about the men folk. We love to see the boys out enjoying a match and a few pints after. But when they come home they are great fathers and lovers. Two or three matches a week let them enjoy. We women have the best of two worlds, out from under our feet then great to see them home again. There goes GEORGIE poor man has a phobia if the word irish is mentioned, such a jealous little git.

I can't figure this one out. If 94 percent of Chinese men prefer to talk about soccer over sex, how come there's so many of them? It begs the question.

Backs up my own impression--Irish people are boring. It's a real myth that they are good conversationalists. And one of the most boring places in the world is a bar in Ireland. They're usually showing some English soccer game at full volume on TV, and the Irish punters are roaring and yelling and cursing. Don't be fooled by the Irish tourism promotions for pubs--most of them are dumps.
