An Irishman has claimed responsibility for the ‘no Irish need apply’ advert in an Australian newspaper that has caused controversy down under – while an Englishman has apologised for it.

The Irish Times reports that the Irishman, from Northern Ireland, and his English business partner posted the job ad on the Gumtree website.

The ad warned that ‘No Irish need apply’ and has been slated.

When a reporter from the Irish Times rang the cell phone number posted on the ad, it was answered by a man with a Northern Ireland accent.

The advert has since been removed but the man admitted he had placed it.

“They were just not turning up,” he said. “It’s a lot different over here, so it is.

“Coming in hungover on a Monday morning is no good. I’m trying to run a business here. I know it sounds bad, but I haven’t meant anything bad by it.”

The Englishman then phoned the reporter from the same number and claimed he had placed the ad.

He said “I don’t have any problem with the Irish whatsoever.

“I think this has been blown completely out of proportion, because I just don’t have the time to train an Irish person up at the moment. I think it’s just all gone a bit sideways and people have looked at it the wrong way.

“It never occurred to him that anyone would take offence at the ad. I do apologise, I’m very, very sorry. I never meant to come across like that.”

Australia’s race discrimination commissioner Helen Szoke told the paper that the advert amounted to discrimination.

“It is unlawful to advertise in this way. There are grounds for people to bring a complaint of discrimination to the Australian Human Rights Commission,” said Dr Szoke.

Creakygate. Da bleedin' can't do da!! roight?? Ya muppeh ya~~Bleedin' batter ya!!D’yaknowhwatimeanlike?
The apology means nothing I bet he will not hire Irish people anyway. His racist mindset is his problem not meaningless weasel words.
ReturnedYank: Love it! ~ How about: "No drunken t'icks wid stewpit accents who doant havva clew how t'lay briks, an' are always cryin' fer der Mammy ~ need apply"
"I just don’t have the time to train an Irish person up at the moment.." I'm sorry - but in what way is that not racist? Does he have time to train a Pole, a Lithuanian, a Scot?
That last line should read "You could say he might be acting unreasonably, but you couldn't say he is racist."
Well, it's not racist because you can't be racist against your own people. Racism only occurs when you discriminate against people from outside your own ethnic group. If I turned up in New York and some Irish American refused to employ me because I am an Irish person born in London, well that's not racist because we are the same ethnic group. But if an Indian person born in the UK refused to employ me because I am an UK-born Irish person, well, that would be racist because we are different ethnic groups, even though we are both born in the same country. The Irish American would be acting unreasonably but could not be guilty of racism. Same with this Irish bloke in Australia. You could say that he might be unreasonable, but you couldn't say he is racist.
Dear ReturnedYank, Not necessarily a bigot, you are either young, naive, in denial, or living in a bubble. As the old philosopher once said, "Walk a mile in my shoes". In other words, you cannot make such a judgement about me unless you have experienced my life or walked beside me.
Cristoir it sounds like you are the bigot.
But if the bigot is a Brit-loyalist, insisting that the Six-Counties are British, why falsely label him Irish?
The problem with anti-Irish discrimination is that it is too obvious! Yet people continue to say things about the Irish that they would never dare say about, for example, African-Americans or Jews. If people are going to make anti-Irish comments, they need to start using code words e.g. "No drinkers need apply." :-)
All the apologies are deafening....not, for the caustic comments directed at Australians yesterday for being anti-Irish???? We are an egalitarian society and will even accommodate the occasional anti-Irish, Irishman!
