Paul Walsh, an Irish entrepreneur, has launched a new computer software platform this month called MetaCert ,which can identify and label sexually explicit adult web pages.

The software can be downloaded as a free Firefox bowser plugin and to date it has already labeled over 320 million sexually explicit webpages. Walsh says MetaCert will allow concerned parents to set a pass code, which must be entered into the computer before an adult page can load.

Unlike previous adult website blockers, MetaCert can distinguish between a webpage containing medical information and pornography.

Walsh, who began his career at AOL in the mid 1990s, before founding MetaCert, told The Next Web: 'The labeling software gives Internet users an unprecedented level of control: no longer do all sites have to be uniformly blocked or unblocked, since responsible adults can choose whether or not to enter the pass code which will enable them to progress through to a labeled site. They can do this safe in the knowledge that others in the household are still protected.'

'Importantly, our system does not block or manipulate content and does not affect search result ranking. All it does is to let users know that individual search results point to adult content. Whether a user follows such links remains entirely a matter of personal choice, but it’s an informed choice.

'Similarly, we can reassure users that our technology does not in any way track what they do on the web – privacy of all users is important to us.'

GeorgeDillon the comments below are from you. I don't see any comments from "sirpeter' - unless I'm missing something?
PaulWalsh--You're addressing the wrong guy. The guy who posts here as sirpeter is the guy you need to advise.
@GeorgeDillion MetaCert doesn't have an opinion on what is and what isn't appropriate. We simply provide more information about the content and it's potential suitability before you visit a site. 1. You are correct. As an adult, you may wish to use the browser extension to find adult content. 2. As an adult, you may wish to have adult sites highlighted in search results so you can avoid them at home in front of the children, or at work, where the environment isn't suitable. 3. You may wish to include a password to ensure the browser blocks adults content when you're at work - for example, if you receive an email from a colleague, it may lead to adult content that is suitable for you, but your environment may not be suitable. 4. You may wish to use the extension to block your family members from accessing adult content. MetaCert can't be held liable for helping people find what they want whilst excluding what 'they' deem inappropriate for themselves, or their loved ones. ---- As a separate note, our data set will never be sold to companies that provide an adult entertainment related revenue model. Our data set will only be given to companies that provide family safety solutions.
Did it never occur to this guy Walsh that lots of people--our own sirpeter is a case in point--are liable to use this software in order to FIND those sites?
Has it ever occurred to this busybody that some people (our own sirpeter for example) will use his software to FIND porno sites?
