Irishman can’t recall Pamplona bull run horror that injured 50
Dublin man made miraculous escape at Spanish festival
An Irishman who was almost trampled to death at the annual Bull Run in the Spanish city of Pamplona has no memory of the incident.
The Irish Daily Star reports that Robert Thackaberry (28) was trapped under a mass pile-up of 22 bodies on Sunday, July 14, near the entrance to the bull ring.
The Irishman attended the San Fermin Bull Running Festival in Pamplona as part of his friend’s
The engineer was treated for asphyxia and chest trauma over five days in Navarra Hospital before he returned home to Clondalkin, Dublin earlier this week.
Thackaberry told the Star: “I’ve now seen footage of it and it is quite dramatic to watch, but I don’t remember it.
“I’m really happy that I can say that because it means I’m still here. It could’ve been much worse.
He continued: “I got home in one piece and that’s the main thing. To be back without any major injuries is unbelievable.
“I don’t really believe in God but someone was definitely looking out for me.”
He said: “I know I’m lucky to be alive. I remember running up to the bull-ring and seeing people fall in front of me and getting pushed and pinned to the ground.
“I lost consciousness. The next thing I knew I was coming to in a makeshift hospital in the bull-ring and then being put in an ambulance,” he added
15 people have died at the annual event since records began in 1911.
