An Irish woman’s Lesbian partner has given birth to quintuplets in Australia.
Rosemary Nolan, a 22-year-old emigrant from Waterford, has told her family she is ‘over the moon’ after the multiple births.
Nolan’s partner Melissa Keevers (27) beat odds of more than 60million to one when they conceived the Quins without IVF. The couple, who already have an 18 month old toddler Lily, introduced the three girls and two boys to the world via Australian television on Sunday night.
Noah, Charlie, Eireann, Evie and Abby were born prematurely in Brisbane at 26 weeks on January 2nd, weighing between 830 grams and 905 grams.
“We got very teary when they were born,” Rosemary told Australian magazine Woman’s Day.
“We couldn’t hold them as they were so small. We wanted to cuddle them but we knew the biggest thing was to make sure they were all right.”
Australian born Melissa was inseminated with sperm from an American donor, a 27-year-old law student who is also father to their 18-month-old daughter.
The five babies are doing well in hospital but it will be some time before they are allowed home to their proud parents.
“After just having five babies it’s hard to only be able to visit them and touch them through a hole in the crib,” said Melissa.
Waterford born Rosemary arrived in Australia as a backpacker in 2008 and met Melissa when she answered a newspaper ad selling a motorbike.
The couple, who estimate they will go through 70 nappies a day, have set up a website at www.twoladiessixbabies.com seeking financial support.
