Read more: Irish woman is convicted of rape
A 25-year-old Irish nurse who had been on a working visa in Australia has been sentenced to two-and-a-half years in prison for the rape of a 32-year-old mother of two.
Anne-Marie O'Loughlin was found guilty in Brisbane District Court last year on two counts of digital rape and deprivation of liberty in the bathrooms of the Canton Hotel on November 29 of last year. Judge David Reid said O'Loughlin's "cavalier attitude" and regular excessive consumption of alcohol had been the reason she had acted completely out of character.
O'Loughlin, who wept throughout the sentencing hearing, heard that she would be deported following her release from jail. The judge recommended that she should be eligible for parole on her 27th birthday, on March 3 next year.
Her crime was described in court as "persistent sexual aggression.”
The court heard that her victim kissed O'Loughlin’s back at first in an effort to get out of the toilet cubicle. O'Loughlin then allegedly put her hand down her jeans.
The victim cried out to the person in the next cubicle, who was heard saying, "I'm getting security." O'Loughlin then left the bathroom. After leaving the bathroom the victim confided in her husband that she had been attacked.
A police interview carried out after the attack was played in court. The court heard that O'Loughlin had no recollection of kissing the woman but admitted it was possible.
The victim's husband testified in court. He said that he had been extremely upset when his wife told him about the attack. He called the police and attempted to detain O'Loughlin as she tried to leave in a taxi.
Defense lawyer Damien Walsh said that his client was lodging an appeal against the conviction.
O'Loughlin had previously worked as a nurse in Brisbane's Mater Hospital. Her lawyer said she was a well-regarded and highly respected health-care professional.
Judge Reid said, "It is not a question of drinking, but drinking to excess ... (which) got her (O'Loughlin) into this position."
O'Loughlin had consumed up to three bottles of wine and countless mixed liquor drinks.

Maggiep: For the most part you are corerect, but if the undocemented alien in question happens to be a native of Ireland, he/she may be deported for the least infraction of the law. Early last month a Galwayman was deported from Boston by Immigration officials ater he had been fined $100 for a minor traffic violation. About 12 years ago, 6 members of a camogie team were arrested by the Border Patrol as they returned fro Canada after playing a match with a team in Montreal. These young ladies had NOT committed any crime but they had overstayed the visitors' visas. Then the were all deported. It seems as though the Irish who come here on visitors' visas are treated much more harshly than the millions of foreigners who ILLEGALLY enter thru our southern border and avail themselves of many free benefits at taxpayers' expense.

Here in the US she would be registered democrat voter and might run for congress when she got out, never be deported

I agree with Irishman57, this so called victim kissed the "other for all of three minutes, if you've kissed someone, you know that three minutes is quite long, and would usually mean something, this definitly smells." And not just Anne-Marie O'Loughlin's finger.

This doesn't make any sense. Why would the woman who was married kiss a complete stranger in a bathroom stall, when another patron of the place was in there and could get help or step in and help her get away form the supposed rapist. Additionally, three minutes in s an incredibly long time to kiss anyone, particularly if you are trying to get away form someone. Something stinks all over this case.

If the details outlined in this article are true then it is both disgusting and disturbing. There are many cases similar to this one and I don't think alcohol has anything to do with it. Such women are just perverts. If she is guilty then the sentence is like a slap on the hand. Just because the defendant is a female is no reason for such a light sentence. A man would have received a much stiffer sentence for the same crime.

I read that "O'Loughlin attacked the 34-year-old woman in the female toilets of the hotel where she digitally vaginally and anally raped the woman." "The victim, who cannot be named, told the court that although she kissed O'Loughlin in the toilets for up to three minutes, she had not given consent for Ms O'Loughlin to pull up her top and bra and touch her breast."

It truly is a stretch of imagination for anyone to consider this assault a rape. The accused had a little bit too much to drink, kissed another woman, and is now being thrown in jail for over two years. How is this justice? No, this is madness.

SNL stuff?

Weird to say the least. How could she be raped by another woman in a toilet with another woman in the next cubicle? She did not have her trousers off. All she is accused of doing is kissing the other woman. If that was a male, he sure would not do time for a kiss. Also most men rapists - real ones- get off with a caution if they were so drunk and do not remember. How many men have really raped others in their sleep and walk free. No, this stinks of something.....no doubt the truth will surface.

I was there in court when her sentence was given. The jailing of this woman is an absolute disgrace and is based on the filmiest of evidence and conjecture. How a jury could convict her is mind boggling and it is not only me saying it. There is certainly a lot more to this case than what has been reported. The Irish Govt and every Irish person and supporter should get behind her and offer her some support. I am ashamed to be Australian

Hummmm...was the "victim" penetrated with a foreing object? for how long this took place? for just a kiss?...guess this only happen in Australia...btw I agree with Irishman57.

The main photo shows a building called the Caxton Hotel. This story tells of the incident occurring in the Canton Hotel. That discrepancy makes me doubt the veracity of the whole story.

I know her and her parents, just can't believe it of AnneMarie. There's got to be something at the back of it. I don't think we're seeing the whole story here. I don't think the so-called victim is a squeaky clean as she maintains.

"O'Loughlin's "cavalier attitude" and regular excessive consumption of alcohol...." An Irish person drink alcohol to excess? Not a chance!
WoundedKnee | Feb 19, 2011, 09:11 AM EST
The article is badly written. Was it a rape conviction or was it not? If the former, the sentence is absurdly light, tho typical of the inequality of the sexes in sentencing.
