The money, she says, was enough to cover her costs.

“One day I did a 15 hour shift and made $250,” she said. “I usually made about $70 a day and was paid $3 an hour.”

Highlights of her summer included a trip to Philadelphia and Washington, D.C., as well as enjoying the final days of her summer in New York City.

“We did a lot of shopping,” Conway said, adding she would love to live in the Big Apple. But for now, it’s back to college to finish her studies.

NEW YORK CITY J-1

At the Aisling Irish Community Center in Yonkers, in recent days, J-1 students have been coming in to print off their tickets for their return flight home.

Órla Kelleher, executive director of the center, reported that there were no major incidents among J-1 summer students this summer in New York.

“We surveyed almost 700 this year,” said Kelleher, who says students were affected by the common problems with work and accommodation.

“The best advice is to be prepared in advance of coming out next year,” she said.

Of those students that were surveyed by the center, some were not reachable by midsummer.

“When we did call the students about a month in, a lot of phones were disconnected or out of service,” she said.

“They realize that if they have not found work in the first few weeks it doesn’t make sense to stay on.”

As the J-1 adventure for this year’s students draws to a close, Kelleher reflected on the importance of their contribution to the Irish community in Woodlawn.

“It is nice to see a young, vibrant community coming in every May,” she said.  “It’s uplifting.”

Australia, Canada, and Switz are now taking definitive steps of deporting drunken Irish. As an Irishman our culture has always been a booze-fuelled brawl accepted and condoned by its religion (get drunk and your forgiven) and questionable GAA sporting heritage (get really drunk and you're a hero?). In essence it is the combo of religion, GAA, gombeen politico's that condone the drunken shenanigans we Irish love to pretend has a cause. Deport all and drunken sundry and let GAA sort them out!
About the news story.. There are bad apples and morons in all nationalities. Speaking as an American I'm positive that are enough of my fellow Americans who have shown their posteriors in other countries. We even have no problems doing it at home.
What is with the language discussion? It is a stupid issue to be annoyed about. It is one thing to speak another language for someone who needs a translator and another to be mad because the person who you think should know a language from their country doesn't. Most countries are enough of a melting pot for anyone to learn all the languages need to speak with all nationalities. English is a common language for most countries. If a different language is needed to communicate I'll get a translator or learn the language. Most times knowing a second language becomes at most a neat oddity if there is another(language)that is common with all parties-English.
You are definitly one sick eejit Woundedknee, getting up your nose are we. Must be eating away at you that you are not Irish or native American, mongral is the word.

Ciaradexy:must have had her dole money reinstated she is back on line whinging about Americans, bet she will be out trying to get a bit of American culture into her this weekend
ciaradexy you seem to be oblivious to the fact that mass consumerist/media degeneracy is firmly ingrained in Irish society to nearly the same extent as it is in the US. There are very few remaining characteristics which distinguish Ireland from the anglo-sphere due to the materialist degeneracy of the Dublin establishment/mass media.
half the posts on this article are rubbish and have nothing to do with the article - stick to the topic or is that too hard for some of ye to grasp!!!
George, Irish is a minority language here. All Irish people speak English. Are you upset no one wants to speak to you in English here let alone irish? I heard an American try to speak Irish in a cafe on Aran Mor a few weeks ago and the waitress told him that she only speaks Irish to Irish people. Sums it up really.
You could replace 'Irish' with 'american' and 'Chicago' with 'Dublin' or 'Japan'. Lads, dont minded woundedknee who also posts under the name George Dillon on also posts on the right wing news paper the irish Independent as kev408. Hes an angry American who hates us Irish because he calls himself irish yet no one else on the planet considers him so. he is to be pitied.
I was in a cab going to the airport in Myrtle Beach South Carolina. The cab driver was raving about the young Irish kids that come over for the summer. She said they are very polite. Now I read this. There are always rotten apples that give a bad rep to others. Can I ask how this story became a battle over the Irish language?
Momma Ginty, every post you write is nonsense. You say I try to "catch" the Irish who can't speak a word of their ancient language, a language which they have supposedly "studied" for a dozen years or more. No, you idiot, I try to communicate with them in Irish, because they're Irish. And they can't. Just like your children can't--don't bother lying to us, I know the reality. As for poster MichaelCollins, he is good evidence that the Irish who have adopted English certainly have not mastered the language. The fool is full of vulgar verbiage--he can't express a sentence without flatulence or obscenity. He sounds like someone the linguists occasionally write about--a person who is proficient in no language.
