The Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said the reconstruction of the Twin Towers site is “symbolic of the path Ireland is taking” on its path to economic recovery.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny made the comments when he visited the Freedom Tower in downtown Manhattan on Sunday and became the first political leader to visit the top of the Ground Zero redevelopment.

“It is a privilege to be here on St Patrick’s Day, 2013,” he said. “My understanding is that this is the first opportunity for a political leader to come this high.”

The Irish leader and his wife Fionnuala both signed their names and the date on an iron girder of the 105th floor.

He also visited the Queens neighborhood of Breezy Point, which was badly affected by Hurricane Sandy last October.

On Saturday, Kenny marched down Fifth Avenue in the New York St Patrick’s Day parade. He also met with New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who he presented with an “emigrant’s teapot.”

On Monday the Irish leader travelled to Washington DC, where he was presented with an award at George Washington University.

Today he will present President Obama with the traditional bowl of shamrock in the White House in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day.

Seanmor | Apr 06, 2013, 10:45 AM EDT>>>>>>>>>>>>>WELL U DONT SOUND VERY IRISH OR BRITISH TO ME.. MAYBE YOU'VE BEEN OVER THERE FOR TOO LONG AND ALL THOSE BIG MACS AND MILKSHAKES HAVE GONE TO YOUR BRAIN AND MADE YOU ALL AMERICANISED.. SHAME REALLY !!! ... BUT MY ORIGINAL POINT WAS ENDA KENNY SHOULD GET HIS BIG FAT ASS BACK TO IRELAND AND SORT OUT THE BIG MESS IN THE ECONOMY BESIDES LONG WEEKENDS AWAY.. TOURING NEW YORK LOOKING AT MONUMENTS AND SIGNTSEEING ALL AT MY TAX PAYERS EXPESE..
I just discovered that the 3 previous posts mention my bith place, but none is correct. I was born in Hammersmith, LONDON, and spent the first 4 months of my life in that city. I was raised in Ireland and emigrated to NYC at the age of 18. Soon after being discharges from the Marine Corps, I took an active part in Irish cultural events in the Big Apple, especially Conradh na Gaeilge Bhronx during the 8 years that Gaelic League branch held Gaeilge classeas, céilîs and meeting in the Woodlawn PRESBYTERIAN Church hall (where I met my future wife). For 4 or 5 years in the '90s she marched beside me in the St. Patric's Day parade as a flag-bearer. The parade of 1985 will almost be the most memorable one for me because of its Grand Marshal,Peter King, the future Congressman who contributed much to arranging the G.F.A., which brought peace to the northern part of my beloved homeland.

Seanmor | Mar 19, 2013, 06:21 PM EDT >>>>>BUT YOUR AMERICAN BORN IN AMERICA AND LIVING IN AMERICA .. WHAT YOU THINK MEANS NOTHING TO ME AN IRISHMAN WITH AN IRISH PASSPORT BORN IN IRELAND AND I LIVE HERE.. PLEASE PLEASE FOCUS ON YOUR OWN AFFAIRS AND KEEP OUT OF IRISH AFFAIRS AS WE OVER HERE ARE HAPPY WITH THE PEACE THAT WE NOW HAVE LIVING HAPPILY ALONGSIDE OUR BRITISH NEIGHBORS.. AND I FOR ONE DO NOT LIKE YOUR COMMENTS WHERE YOU TRY TO STIR UP THIS WHOLE PROTESTANT AND CATHOLIC THING AGAIN.... WE IN IRELAND HAVE MOVED ON SO PLEASE KEEP YOUR OPINIONS TO YOURSELF AS THEY ARE OF NO IMPORTANCE TO US UNLESS YOU HAVE SOMETHING HAPPY AND POSITIVE TO SAY OTHERWISE KEEP YOUR BITTERNESS TO YOURSELF !! CHEERS
Seanmor, I'm not sure what that means to be a Free Stater. It just seems imminent that there will be a United Ireland.
Searlit: In being "thoroughly" Irish means being a staunch Free Stater, then Kenny meets that definition. But that puts him (and other supporters Partition)in the opposite camp to those of us who embraces the whole country and all its parts(an tîr uile agus gach roinn di). And that does NOT in any was make us anti-Protesnt: My wife is a New England Methodist and I often attend services in her church.
Up and at'em Enda!
I do hope you're wrong about An Taoiseach, Seanmor.Enda Kenny seems thoroughly Irish, enough. I would also like to hear him speak Irish. With his defined accent, I think he might.
WHAT AN IDIOT !!!
I was rather amused bt the Taioseach accepting Mayor Bloomberg's "emigrant's teapot, because he or any other Free State leader has cared nothing about those of us who were forced to emigrate since the foundation of the Southern Irish State. That is especially true if we regardr ALL of Irelland as our homeland, and most of all má labhraimid Gaeilge go minic. That is a language that most T.D.s are highly comtemptuous of.
