Ireland’s Prime Minister Enda Kenny has accused Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams of being a member of the IRA’s Army Council.
The Sunday Independent newspaper reports that Kenny made the claims at the Fine Gael party’s presidential dinner on Saturday night.
Kenny told his party supporters that he is now of the opinion that Adams was not only an IRA member but also a senior figure on its army council.
The Irish PM said: “From all the evidence I have read and from all the evidence I have heard, I believe Gerry Adams was a member of the IRA and I was led to believe he was also a member of the army council.
“Mr Adams’s calls for a truth commission in the North will count for nothing unless he is honest about his role during the Troubles, which claimed more than 3,000 lives.
“When Deputy Adams says to me he wants a truth and reconciliation commission, I’d like him to be absolutely truthful about this.”
The report adds that, in a controversial speech, Kenny also contrasted Adams’s continual denial of being in the IRA with the admission by Martin McGuinness about his senior role within the paramilitary organisation.
Kenny said: “I had a serious discussion with Martin McGuinness, Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, and he was forthright enough and honest enough to say he was a member of the IRA. So Gerry Adams might like to make a statement about that.”
Asked to clarify his comments by reporters, Kenny added: “I was asked a question, do I believe Gerry Adams was a member of the IRA and I said, the evidence I have read and heard led me to believe he was and was a member of the army council - and he might like to make a statement on that.”
Kenny’s comments came just a week after Old Bailey bomber Dolours Price accused Adams of IRA activities in an interview with the Sunday Telegraph newspaper in London.

Leah It would take a better than you to wind me up. Gordan I'm not scoring points on anyone's Irishness If you're proud of been Irish so be it. You're the one who stated Sinn Fein would rule Ireland with a gun at your back.Don't you think your comment was silly and bitter and deserved a silly and bitter retort.
leahkinsella | Oct 04, 2012, 06:38 PM EDT
It's very easy to wind you up Sean from Melbourne! You always behave like a bold child throwing your toys of of the pram!
Gordan Duggan | Oct 04, 2012, 06:28 PM EDT
Sean: Where on earth did you get the idea I'm from the North? As stated before on this site, I was born in Wicklow and brought up in Dublin (Clondalkin). It seems my name is not Irish enough for you! My grandfathers fought both in the first World War and in the Irish War of Independance. (on both sides)and they both swore off war. I also lived in Australia for a number of years so I dont get your point. Are you more Irish then the rest of us.?
seamus60 | Oct 03, 2012, 09:24 PM EDT
way to go JAJANE so you reckon he took a VOW. Why would he have done that ? without giving anything away of course. Can we rule out the truth commission that Marty and Gerry say they would like (not) on the grounds that anyone who was a Vol is sworn by oath (vow) to secrecy forever. Maybe Gerry isn`t joking when he says "they haven`t gone away ye know". Otherwise who`ll give all us old ex combatants the order that supercedes that origional oath. Not sure if thats allowed but hey Gerry and Marty just made up new and changed the old rules to suit their agenda as they went along. Its all got very confusing.........
seanomelb | Oct 03, 2012, 08:28 PM EDT
I do not hate Australia maybe a brief visit would help you understand the democracy Australia is. You have no idea on my vision of Ireland as we have never discussed it. If Sinn Fein gain power in Ireland it will be through the ballot box that,s called democracy. My family's association with Sinn Fein spans 90 yrs and that includes members of different faiths. What have you done to halt the march of freedom Leah!! Sit on your ar@e in front of the telly spouting your uninformed vitriol. Afraid to take any action to defend your point of view.BTW Gordon from the north I will decide where I live and how often I visit Ireland,an orange reprobate like you will not make that determination for me.
Gordan Duggan | Oct 03, 2012, 07:37 PM EDT
Sean in Melbourne, you are living in a British Commonwealth country not here in the Irish State which is obvious from your comments you hate. It's easy to comment when you don;t live here. You need to grow up man. I am determined my three year old daughter is not going to grow up in the sort of Ireland you envisage under the likes of Sinn Fein (a hell on earth). So stay in Australia, we don't want you here.
leahkinsella | Oct 03, 2012, 07:18 PM EDT
Seano poor diddums you're hurt by Eamon Butler's comments. Been too long out of Ireland.. You won't have to face the consquences if Sinn Fein ever get into power in Ireland and the civil war that follows as you will be safe in Melbourne. JaJane, when were you in the IRA?
JaJane | Oct 03, 2012, 04:46 PM EDT
Gerry needs to remember that he took a VOW. IRA men and women took a VOW OF SILENCE,FOREVER,PERIOD. and B.Hughes should have kept his mouth shut. How do you know what Edna Kenny has ever done? You take his word. He "claims", he assumes, he thinks, he heard, he takes the word of a woman who is undeniably not in her right mind, he uses hearsay, accusitions, where is the evidence. McGuinness should keep his mouth shut about the IRA. He took the VO too. KEEP YOUR MOUTHS SHUT~ REMEMBER THE VOW~!
seanomelb | Oct 02, 2012, 07:43 PM EDT
Your anti Sinn Fein vitriol negates your faux "middle of the road stance,Your "guns at our backs" phrase certainly supports your siege mentality. The barstool remark is a cheap shot, but then, what an one except from a wounded poster on IC.
EamonButler | Oct 02, 2012, 11:08 AM EDT
Actually aloismartin, James Connolly was one of the founders of the Irish Labour Party, he was born and brought in Cowgate, Glasgow and joined the British Army which is how he came to be in Ireland where he met his wife and eventually fought in the 1916 Rising. Seanomelb, I not right wing, more middle of the road, and am a Nationalist in the best sense because I love the Irish Republic and don't want to see it crippled by hate in the same way Ulster was. Get off that bar stool in Australia and get out in the sun, it will do you good.
aloistmartin | Oct 01, 2012, 08:15 PM EDT
EamonButler@ " Republican " Ireland actually has a Socialist and a Marxist Party ! To think that even Fine Gael started out Arm and Arm with the likes of James Connolly and Vladimir Lenin :)
seanomelb | Oct 01, 2012, 08:07 PM EDT
There are thousands hundreds of people who were known members of the IRA and are free walking the streets of the world and some are members of parliaments in the north and the Britain. E.Butler is just another nationalist hater and suffers from a typical right wing siege mentality. Short on facts and plenty of hate.
EamonButler | Oct 01, 2012, 03:26 PM EDT
Enda Kenny did't shoot anybody. What has Adams ever done for the Irish Republic. a country he hates and only pays lip service to. I am not a fan of the present government but the thought of Sinn Fein ruling our country (most likely with guns at our backs) does not enthrall me or my family one bit. As for that individual who lives in France and plans to come home to register for the next election, you're too late, the authorities have ways of checking you know.
Thomas84 | Oct 01, 2012, 02:27 PM EDT
Enda is petrified by the rise of sinn fein and cant point to a single thing he has done right in government. He is both a traitor and a humiliation f0or ireland and any man/woman/dog/cat/fish that lives in ireland and would rather him in power than jerry adams is a moron plain and simple. Whatever else you want to say about jerry adams he fought for ireland whether you agree or not and enda has sold the place to germany for a fat pension. Get your priorities right of get out of the way. The war is over, leave it in the past and move on
EamonButler | Oct 01, 2012, 02:08 PM EDT
Would Silling stay in France. He cant register to vote in ROI while living in a foreign country. We can do without this person.
EamonButler | Oct 01, 2012, 01:48 PM EDT
Are some of the people on this site really serious if they think Adams was not in the IRA and that a Marxist party like Sinn Fein could really get into the Irish Government in Ireland? Are they not listening to the Irish people. It's wishful thinking on their part. The party does not have the power and Adams is a minor Marxist politican in ROI with a shady past. He can't admit to being in the IRA because he would be arrested yet he wants Truth and Reconciliatin. The Irish Government is not afraid of Gerry Adams whatever some posters on this site may think but the ordinary citizens are worried what would happen to Ireland if a Marxist party like Sinn Fein got into power. Nor would the American Government like it. At 63, I remember only too well what happened in the North and don't want my children or grandchildren to experience that terror. If the Nationalists and Loyalists can't get along, then they would not get along with us and besides we don't want any part of it. One civil war is enough.
warrenpoint00 | Oct 01, 2012, 01:25 PM EDT
Of course Gerry was in the IRA and he should wear the badge of honour with pride. He dont have to hide that privilege or to prove it to anyone.
jacersagain | Oct 01, 2012, 12:58 PM EDT
Mr. Kenny, Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland and leader of the Fine Gael party should remember that Michael Collins, the effective founder of Fine Gael, was an Irish murdering terrorist in his day. I’d wonder if he feels proud to be leader of Fine Gael today, asking questions like this of Gerry Adams.
Searlit | Oct 01, 2012, 12:27 PM EDT
The Irish Republican Army, as much as it has been trashed and made out to be rebels and worse, has collectively preserved Irish history. If not for the continuity of their defense against outside forces that would revise history, at every opportunity, I'm afraid the truth of what happened in Ireland over the past hundred's of years would've been lost. I detest violence, though I think people have a right to their own Country, and the defense of it.
pilib04 | Oct 01, 2012, 10:41 AM EDT
Must be a slow news day. Since the Taoiseach has nothing to contribute towards restoring the Irish economy he has gone to the Blue Shirts favorite card, bashing Sinn Fein.
IrelandNorth | Oct 01, 2012, 06:25 AM EDT
Opinions aren't facts. And Taoiseach Ó Cíonnaith is not an expert witness. What evidence (sic) has he seen or read, and why is it not being presented in a court of law. If supplied by Dept of Justice (sic) (in collaboration with MI6?), trial by media where one is guilty by suspicion is entirely inappropriate. Beliefs are in the realms of religion not politics. He should be less inclined to be led anywhere by anyone. Truth Commission (TC) would need to consider Free State Army atrocities against republicans during 1920s [un]civil war, and I say that as an ex-Irish Army MP NCO. TC would also have to investigatge successive Irish Government's inactivity/passivity during loyalist pogroms of northern Catholic/nationalists in late 60s/early 70s, when many Irish Army personnel were willing to do their defensive duty in a dangerous political vacuum of prevarication. Note current Taoiseach's divide and conquer tactic to partitioning McGuinness and IRA from Adams and Sinn Fein. Citizen Adams would do well to toy with his mobile phone during any attempted interrogation in Dáil Éireann. Remember Taoiseach - the IRA were a symptom of a Carsonian disease called the UVF.
JaJane | Oct 01, 2012, 01:18 AM EDT
Believe none of what you hear, half of what you read and some of what you see. Members of the IRA took a Vow of Silence, Forever. Period. He's a good IRA man. to the end. forever. Brendan Hughes should have kept his mouth shut and so to McIntyre. Ed Moloney started this whole mess with the tapes. I blame them. up the ra TAL
Springfield9 | Oct 01, 2012, 01:08 AM EDT
Is there anyone who doesn't know that Gerry was on the Army council? Could anyone be so naive as to deny that his statements concerning his affiliation are a pack of lies? I think he feels the heat and moved a tad South to protect himself.

Gerry's Sinn Fein party success has them on the run - with his party's success at the polls and the other found wanting politicians at risk - such a scare has even the troika partnership eager to do the divert tact of getting Boston College to turn over interviews to discredit Gerry Adams and his fellows. CNN explored the goings on in service to the caball that runs the troika show. Material in the hands of the murdering colluders is off limits.
PhlutiePhan | Sep 30, 2012, 09:14 PM EDT
@MichaelMcGrath: you say that Adams supports Africans. I say that he supports Muslims as a way to undercut the role of the Catholic Church in Ireland in the name of radical world socialism.
aloistmartin | Sep 30, 2012, 07:27 PM EDT
When Ireland needed Sinn Fein at the Table, Gerry Adams - seemed like a real good idea ? But now that the Bourgeois has collected its Globalizationist marbles, Sinn Fein`s growing role as voice of the Polarization, Class War, Left; has become a Long Dark suspicious shadow, in Fine Gael`s reflex grasp, on post Easter Rising Ireland.
seanomelb | Sep 30, 2012, 07:03 PM EDT
Most Irish probably took it for granted that he was a leading IRA figure when he was elected ,first as MP and then as a TD.Fine Gael is the west brit party and have vilified Sinn Fein since Fine Gaels inception. Kenny and his right wing trolls are continuing their anti nationalist rants, aided and abetted y the ignorant anti nationalists below.

Kevin Keogh has something when he speaks about Anglo Irish. I happened to be back in Ireland last month and I had a few euros in Anglo Irish. To make a long story short, when Kenny was in London for Olympic Games he met with Romney in the Irish Embassy. According to my sources, Kenny was assuring Romney that the bonds in Anglo Irish held by Bain Capital were safe. You can look back at the picture of Romney meeting with Kenny. Romney sure was not looking for the Irish vote. He was looking for their money.

Gerry Adams' role in or out of the IRA is not nearly as relevant as is the great works that Sinn Fein, its elected leaders, volunteers and those working to make Ireland a better place for its citizens. Speculation about Gerry Adams' involvement in the IRA should not be reasons for other alleged political leaders (Miceal Martin, Enda Kenny and Eamon Gilmore)to dismiss outright the work that Sinn Fein does on behalf of a large constituency in the 32 counties.
KevinKehoe | Sep 30, 2012, 01:36 PM EDT
Talking about Lier's quoting Kenny of Fine Gael and Gilmore of Labour while asking the people to vote for them. Kenny" not one more € will Anglo get if you elect me" Gilmore " its Labours way not Brussels way" 2 two faced Liars. Least they forget the Good Friday agreement is signed and peace is in place. They are running scared of Sinn Fein and the people will not be conned again even with the help of there news-rag the Irish Independent.
Brolaur | Sep 30, 2012, 12:09 PM EDT
All we need is the proof. You seem to forget that there must be evidence. I know truth has no place in politics. But you're alright! You have your pensions. Sinn Féin, will be the next Government, in time for 2016. Your display at the meeting, with the Pope, was nothing short puerile. Just an ignoramus Enda

The real truth coming out now in dribs and drabs. Every man and his dog on the street knows what he keeps denying. He along with his murdering pal machinegun mcguinness should NEVER be in any government. Both deserve the rope.
MichaelMcGrath | Sep 30, 2012, 09:31 AM EDT
Adams is also one of the chief supporters of African mass immigration into Ireland. He welcomes Black Immigrants protesting at Dail Eireann that they're not getting enough privileges and especially not enough Dole. Google and you'll see all that up on youtube.
Seanmor | Sep 30, 2012, 09:03 AM EDT
No supporter of Partition in the Dáil or Stormont seeems to know what role Adams played in the Provos during their long struggle to drive the British forces out of the NE corner of Ireland. But Mr. Kenny knows all too well that most of the founders of the state of which he is now Taoiseach, including Michael Collins, were capable I.R.A. leaders during the war that won independence for 5/6 of the Irish nation.
