Judge Mary Devins has apologized for the “semi-racist” comments she made in Castlebar District Court last week comparing Ireland’s social welfare system to a charity for Polish people.

She made the comments while dealing with a local case in Castelbar. Enda Moylette, of Derrycoorane, Islandeady, pled guilty to calling an Irish security guard a “fat Polish f***er”. The case was originally heard by Judge Conal Gibbons.

Moylette agreed to pay €1,000 to a Polish charity in lieu of a fine. When asked if there was a Polish charity operating out of Ireland. The judge replied “A Polish charity? There is. It's called the social welfare."

In her apology Devins said she wished to clarify the comment claiming that it was specific to one incident and she never meant to offend the Polish community in Ireland, according to the Irish Examiner.

The Chairperson of the Irish Polish Society, Anna Szewc, has said that she is outraged at her initial comments. She said comments like these do nothing to help people from other countries integrate with the Irish people.

Killian Forde, from the Dublin-based Integration Centre, said her initial comments were “absolutely disgraceful”. He told the Herald her apology was insufficient.

Forde originally considered making an official complaint to the police about Devins’ comment saying “It's the only way to do it. It's the first time I imagine there has been a judge complained about.”

The Centre called the apology “rambling, contrived and spurious statement,” according the Irish Examiner’s report.

These plans have since been retracted.

The Irish Polish Society also accepted her apology while maintaining her original comments were “inappropriate and irresponsible".

Szewc said “Should there be something done about it? I don’t think so.

"If it happened again maybe there should be some consequences from that, but you know sometimes people get emotions, you can always explain that with something else.

"But that's good that she apologized for that."

SHE'S RIGHT !!! IRELAND IS FULL OF POLISH AND EASTERN EUROPEANS LIVING ON WELFARE ANOTHER FINE MESS FROM THE EU...GOTO ANY TOWN IN IRELAND AND ITS FULL OF POLISH IN FANCY APARTMENTS ON RENT ALLOWANCE, CHILDRENS ALLOWANCE AND 188 EURO DOLE EVERY WEEK..WHY??? BECAUSE WELFARE IN POLAND IS NOTHING LIKE IN IRELAND WHERE YOU GET 4 TIMES WHAT YOU GET IN POLAND THERE THE FACTS .. !!!
How dare a politically appointed dignified functionary depart form the scrip written by the secularist hierarchy of the new Church of Political Correctness (that has replaced the decline and fall of the Holy Roman Empire). Tut, tut. Please remain on cue to the dictats of the petit-bourgeois Irish political establishment - Ms Justice!
merefalow@ Government Waste, Corruption, and "Abuse" are not Exclusive to the Lower Class weal ! Also note that Wealthy Protestant Americans make no great differentiation between Poor, Polish, Irish, Basque, or Italian Catholics ~
,why apologise for the truth, social welfare is abused by a large proportion of the workshy community, thats a fact and its a disgrace, its wrong to target a particular ethnicity, but its certainly true the system is seriously abused because its so easy to abuse and its certainly true its a very attractive proposition to imigrents,so she is quite correct in what she says but political correctness prevents her from naming racially who she believes takes advantage,is it their fault they take advantage,no its our bloody eu dupe politicoes who allowed it to happenmass uncontrolled imigration is a disaster for any country.
always apologize when telling the truth.
@paolipete, I knew Ireland joined the EU before 1999. I was just saying that my first trip to Ireland was in 1999. Ireland had not changed their money in 1999, though. Poor Ireland, first oppressively ruled by the English for 800 yrs, then the church doing it's damage and now to be subjected to the effects of fierce immigration.
wtf The first mistake was calling it polish welfare they get their share but they have lots of competition. The second one was apologizing, social welfare is killing Ireland. 44% of the workers in Ireland would do better if they quit work and went on welfare.
Ms. Devin`s who has just received her final Catholic School Report Card ~
jmpd43: "insular Irish mentality"...Are you crazy? Ireland is the most open country in Europe. Culturally it is totally open to Anglo-America because it has abandoned its own language. Economically the place is full of foreign corporations and has lost most of its own traditional industries. Demographically, Ireland operates a Wide Open Door policy to migrants. In fact Ireland has the highest number of immigrants per capita in Europe, and probably the highest in the world, if you exclude places like Kuwait, Brunei etc,. which live off armies of foreign near-slaves. Really, what you wrote was drivel and nonsense.
Yet another example of the insular Irish mentality which is still endemic in Ireland. They want all the benefits from EU membership, but aren't too keen on the responsibilities that go with it. No mention of the millions of Irish citizens who left (and are still leaving) for the UK and USA, and claiming welfare in those countries, thereby conveniently offloading the responsibility of the Irish state(let) to support them. This judge personifies that attitude - I bet she's never lived anywhere but Ireland.
@Searlit, FYI,Ireland joined the EU, formerly known as the EEC, in 1973 [not 1999] as a result of a national referendum.
I was worried when I heard that Ireland was joining the EU. When I first visited in 1999, Ireland was doing well. Then when I heard Ireland was changing it's monetary system from the punt to the Euro. I thought it was definitely a mistake. I have no problem with immigrants, but mass immigration, especially in a country as small as Ireland is devastating to the indigenous population.
One can hardly blame Judge Devins for her 'offensive' comment, since foreigners, including Poles, cast taxpayers in the Irish state about €400 million a year (not including the liberal benefits provided in theNorth to immigrants). The judge's comment in Castlebar is largerly true.
...out of the mouths of babes, fools and judges... I can't understand why she back-pedalled after being brave enough to tell it like it is! Polish outrageous abuse of the Welfare system is well documented but the real scandal is why country continues to pay generous benefits to 'ghost workers' and even their children back home. This Judge should be sacked for backing down - not for telling the truth!
Like all good witticisms, this reflected a reality. However, it was probably better left to pub or dinner party, where I am sure far more biting observations on Mass Immigration are regularly made in Ireland. On a side issue, this guy Forde's "Integration centre" is yet another of the shill Mass Immigration pressure groups funded by American Billionaire Chuck Feeney. What the hell is an American billionaire doing helping to pay to clamp down on free speech in a foreign country? And what a truly worthless way for this guy to waste his money, when genuine charities cry out for help in Ireland. This Feeney backed out like a scalded cat a few years back when the Irish ruling class told him to quit funding that investigative body he had given some money to. Hands off investigating graft and corruption, they told him, but sure, go ahead and fund for the foreign settlers we bosses need as cheap labour.
