Hundreds join the unemployment line

Radical measures will be required to reduce Ireland's "staggering" unemployment Irish jobs minister Richard Bruton told supporters on Saturday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

He said he plans to introduce flexibility for new hires in businesses like tourism, hotels and restaurants, but he does not intend to lower the basic pay rates in those industries.

Last week, Bruton ran into opposition from labor unions and lawmakers when he proposed to reform protections for private sector workers.

"Many businesses are hanging on by their fingernails. We must quickly make decisions on reform across all sectors of the economy in order to build momentum for economic recovery," Bruton said in a speech to party members.

According to figures release last week by the Irish government, the Irish jobless rate has reached 14.8% of the labor force.

Georgie Boy.Three words.Take your meds.
canadianirish: I guess I use the pronoun "he" in its generic form, rather than have to write s/he every time. Interesting to hear that you are a lady. The surveys of public opinion in Ireland on Mass Immigration show that women are even more opposed to it than men. Young people tend to be more opposed than older people, also.
One thing for sure: When g'ment employees get laid off or retired early, they should be at the very back of the unemployment line, not at the head as is the case in Ireland, now.
Why on earth would Ireland import workers with a 15 percent unemployment rate? Are there rocks in the brains of the Irish government or is this a requirement of the EU? The EU is run by communist who are athetists with the goal of a one world government DICTATED by them, you all know this, right? Say goodbye to your beautiful culture.
@GeorgeDillon - thank you, George. Btw, I'm a 'she' not a 'he'...have a great afternoon! :)
The abusive racist sirpeter is once again spinning his lies to support the Irish bosses' project of importing cheap foreign labor to displace Irish workers. His "statistics" are of course invented by himself. Indeed the Irish Central Statistics Office does NOT keep track of what people do once they are issued their work documents (PPS number). Any readers who have left the Republic of Ireland, be it by ship, by land or by air, know that there is no documents check when you leave. Thus any claim as to the numbers of foreign migrants who have left is a patent lie. But this imbecile is not content with pushing his lies on this site, he attempts to tell a poster--canadianirish--that he did not see what he saw! Canadianirish was struck by the huge numbers of foreign migrants he saw in Ireland. But sirpeter tells him that he didn't really see any such thing!! Another person might report that she was amazed at the fact that Irish people are in a small minority (maybe 20%) on the streets of downtown Dublin. Sirpeter would tell her she was imagining it!! Who would any sane person believe? The poster canadianirish, who made a measured and temperate statement, based on what he perceived when he visited Ireland, or a lunatic who believes that Ireland should continue importing foreigners even while young Irish boys and girls are heading all over the world looking for work? All polls show at least 70% of Irish people oppose Mass Immigration, but the fascist sirpeter wants to shove it down the people's throats.
Give the 'unemployed' one month's notice that their ridiculously high Benefits are to be stopped completely and their partners, lifestyles and family wealth are to be 'means-tested'. Then watch the dossers and scroungers take care of the problem and deal with the people who they think are 'stealing their jobs'! Better warn the Hospitals!
Georgie Boy.What Office of Statistics are you looking at? The Georgie Boy Office of Wrong Statistics is it? According to the Central Statistics Office Ireland.Queot"Of the 65,300 people who emigrated in the year to April 2010.Non-Nationals accounted for 58%.They are leaving you idiot alot more then they are coming in.The number of immigrants to Ireland in the year to April 2010 is 5,800 representing a continuing decline from the peak of 52,700 in the year ending 2007.In 2003, over 47,000 work permits were issued. During 2010, only 7,714 were issued.During the first four months of 2011, a total of 1,119 work permits were issued, with just under 700 renewals.During the same period in 2010, over 1,500 work permits were renewed. I guess canadianirish doesn't know what a dope you are on this site.I will say one thing if you do want to meet immigrants I would look on the taxi ranks and in hotels too.If you want crap money and long hours those are the places you always find immigrants.
This is the same insanity that has turned America into a welfare state. The only radical measure needed is to regulate the mega-corporations/banks who want to reduce the standard of living for everyone. Some people would rather see the world end than have to pay a penny more in taxes.
@GeorgeDillon - great point! During my travels to Ireland over the past few years I've noticed an alarmingly high rate of immigrants in and around Dublin. The taxi drivers would tell me that it was near impossible for their children to find work in the hospitality industry since most of the jobs were going to immigrants. I noticed that in the hotels, most of the staff were immigrants whose English was not the best. Word of caution to the Irish government: CAP IMMIGRATION NOW. Ireland is a little slice of heaven and it's in danger of losing its culture and charm. I'd hate to see it become like Toronto - your country is too charming and quaint.
This is just more baloney. According to the Office of Statistics, more than 25000 PPS numbers (roughly parallel to our SS numbers) were issued to foreigners arriving in Ireland in the first five months of the year. In other words, the country is still importing people, even as the Irish complain about having no job opportunities. Add these figures to the many hundreds of thousands of foreigners (Ireland has the highest immigration rate in the EU) already present. You will never solve Ireland's unemployment "problem" (if it really exists) when every month the Irish government is are adding thousands of new people to the lists.
