1,000 Irish volunteers will descend on the Rockaways peninsula in Queens, New York on Saturday in an Irish Day of Action for the victims of Hurricane Sandy.
They will come by bus, car and whatever way they can get there, from as far away as Washington and North Carolina and from all over New York, Connecticut and New Jersey. They will spread out to six different locations on the Peninsula helping those hardest hit from African American to Irish neighborhoods.
The Irish Day of Action is the brainchild of Irish community leaders and the Irish Consulate in New York who have put together the day at short notice.
“There has been an extraordinary response,” said Peter Ryan Deputy Consul General in New York. ”The suffering after Hurricane Sandy has hit our community hard but they are determined to make a difference and help all those in need.”
The day has already been widely publicized and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has been instrumental in setting up transportation in city buses to the affected area from thre eof the five boroughs.
The buses will leave Queens, the Bronx and Manhattan at 7.a.m and will rech the Rockways about an hour later.
“We fully expect that people will return here once they see the scale of what needs to be done” said Ryan.

My late Irish Uncle Eddie Horan grew up in Far Rockaway. I wish I weren't too old, too far away and didn't have a broken arm or I'd be there helping. God bless those help and those who suffered.

What a wonderfully timely and good thing to do. Myself, I can't come today; I blame the turkey who made me eat too much of itself on Thanksgiving Day, not to mention the added gut from pumpkin and ice cream. Doubtless otherwise I would be with the good people who do good and don't just talk about (it).
